4.2 Cable Connections

Connect the necessary modular cables to your components. Refer to your motherboard and component manuals for specific connection points.

  • 24-pin ATX Motherboard Cable: Connect this main power cable to the corresponding port on your motherboard.
  • 8-pin (4+4) CPU Power Cable: Connect to the CPU power connector on your motherboard. Some motherboards may require two such connectors.
  • PCIe Power Cables: For graphics cards, connect the 6+2 pin PCIe cables to your GPU. Modern high-performance GPUs often require two or more PCIe power connectors.
  • SATA Power Cables: Connect to SSDs, HDDs, and optical drives.
  • IDE/Molex Power Cables: For older peripherals or case fans.

4.3 Initial Power-Up

  1. After all internal connections are made, replace your PC case's side panel.
  2. Connect the AC power cord to the power supply's input socket and then to a wall outlet.
  3. Ensure the main power switch on the back of the PSU is in the "I" (On) position.
  4. Power on your computer.

5. Operating Instructions

The Sharkoon SilentStorm Cool Zero 650W PSU features customizable fan operation modes for optimized cooling and noise levels.

5.1 Fan Control Switches

On the rear of the power supply, next to the main power switch, you will find two small switches:

Figure 5.1: Rear panel of the power supply, showing the main power switch, the Zero RPM Fan Mode switch, and the Fan Delay Mode switch.

  • Zero RPM Fan Mode (ON/OFF):
    • ON: The PSU fan will remain off under low to moderate loads, providing silent operation. The fan will automatically activate when the load increases to maintain optimal temperatures.
    • OFF: The PSU fan will operate continuously, even under low loads. This ensures constant airflow but may result in slightly higher noise levels.
  • Fan Delay Mode (ON/OFF):
    • ON: After the PC is shut down, the PSU fan will continue to spin for a short period (typically a few minutes) to dissipate residual heat from the power supply components. This can help prolong the lifespan of the PSU.
    • OFF: The PSU fan will stop immediately upon PC shutdown.

Adjust these settings according to your preference for noise and cooling performance. It is recommended to keep the Fan Delay Mode ON for improved component longevity.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your power supply.

  • Dust Removal: Periodically clean the exterior of the power supply and its fan grill using compressed air. Ensure the PC is powered off and unplugged before cleaning. Do not insert any objects into the fan or ventilation openings.
  • Cable Management: Ensure cables are neatly routed and do not obstruct airflow within the PC case. Good cable management improves cooling efficiency.
  • Environmental Conditions: Operate the power supply within recommended temperature and humidity ranges. Avoid dusty environments.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your power supply, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power:
    • Check if the AC power cord is securely connected to both the PSU and the wall outlet.
    • Ensure the main power switch on the PSU is in the "I" (On) position.
    • Verify that the wall outlet is functional by testing it with another device.
    • Confirm all modular cables are correctly and firmly connected to the PSU and components.
  • System Instability/Crashes:
    • Ensure the power supply is adequately rated for your system's components.
    • Check for loose cable connections.
    • Monitor system temperatures to ensure components are not overheating.
    • If the issue persists, consult a qualified technician.
  • Fan Noise:
    • If the fan is excessively loud, check the "Zero RPM Fan Mode" switch. If it's OFF, the fan will run continuously. Setting it to ON will keep the fan off during low loads.
    • Ensure the fan is not obstructed by cables or dust.
