Installation (Setup)

The Leviton LB280 circuit breaker features a plug-on design for simplified installation into compatible Leviton Load Centers. Follow these general steps for installation:

  1. Power Disconnection: Before beginning any work, ensure that power to the main service panel is completely disconnected. Verify with a voltage tester.
  2. Panel Wiring: The Leviton Load Center allows for all hot and neutral wires to be terminated at custom lugs in the panel before circuit breakers are installed. This provides ample space for wiring at rough-in.
  3. Breaker Insertion: Once wiring is complete and secured, align the LB280 circuit breaker with the appropriate bus bar slots in the load center. Firmly push the breaker onto the bus bar until it clicks securely into place.
  4. Connection Verification: Double-check all wire connections and ensure the breaker is seated properly.
  5. Restore Power: Close the load center cover and restore power at the main service panel.

Operation

Operating the Leviton LB280 circuit breaker is straightforward:

  • Turning ON: Push the rocker-style switch to the "ON" position. The color indicator will show green, signifying power is flowing through the circuit.
  • Turning OFF: Push the rocker-style switch to the "OFF" position. The color indicator will show red, signifying power to the circuit is disconnected.
  • Tripped Breaker: If an overload or short-circuit occurs, the breaker will automatically trip to the center position. The color indicator will show orange or a specific fault color (if applicable), indicating a tripped state. To reset, first move the switch fully to the "OFF" position, then to "ON". If it immediately trips again, there is still a fault on the circuit that needs to be addressed.

Maintenance

The Leviton LB280 circuit breaker is designed for long-term reliability with minimal maintenance. However, periodic checks are recommended:

  • Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the circuit breaker and the load center for any signs of damage, loose connections, or discoloration.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the load center area clean and free from dust, debris, and obstructions.
  • Testing (if applicable): For AFCI/GFCI type breakers (not this standard model), monthly testing is recommended by pressing the "TEST" button. For standard breakers, no routine testing is typically required beyond ensuring proper operation.
  • Professional Inspection: Consider having a qualified electrician inspect your electrical panel and circuit breakers every few years to ensure continued safe operation.

Troubleshooting

If your Leviton LB280 circuit breaker trips or you experience power issues, consider the following:

  • Breaker Tripped: If the breaker is in the tripped (center) position, it indicates an overload or short-circuit. Disconnect or turn off appliances on that circuit. Reset the breaker by moving it fully to "OFF" then to "ON".
  • Repeated Tripping: If the breaker trips repeatedly after resetting, there is a persistent fault. Do not continue to reset it. This could indicate an overloaded circuit, a short circuit in wiring or an appliance, or a faulty breaker. Contact a qualified electrician.
  • No Power to Circuit: If the breaker is in the "ON" position but there is no power, check the main breaker in the load center. If the main breaker is on, there might be an issue with the wiring or the breaker itself.
  • Unusual Sounds or Smells: If you notice any buzzing, humming, burning smells, or visible arcing from the electrical panel, immediately turn off power at the main service disconnect and contact a qualified electrician.
