Notifier FSP-951 Intelligent Addressable Photo Detector

Instruction Manual

Model: FSP-951 | Brand: Notifier

1. Introduction

The Notifier FSP-951 is an intelligent addressable photoelectric smoke detector designed for use with Notifier's FlashScan protocol. This device provides advanced detection capabilities for fire alarm systems, offering reliable smoke sensing and communication with the control panel. Its photoelectric sensing chamber is optimized to detect a wide range of combustion products, making it suitable for various applications. This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of the FSP-951 detector.

2. Safety Information

Always adhere to local codes and regulations, as well as NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code) requirements, when installing and maintaining fire alarm devices. Disconnect power to the control panel before installing, removing, or servicing the detector. This device operates on a low-voltage circuit; however, improper wiring can damage the detector or the control panel. Refer to the control panel's documentation for specific wiring diagrams and compatibility information. Do not paint the detector, as this can interfere with its operation.

3. Components Overview

The FSP-951 detector consists of a detector head and a compatible mounting base (sold separately). The detector head contains the photoelectric sensing chamber, processing electronics, and communication circuitry. The mounting base provides the electrical connections to the fire alarm circuit and allows for easy installation and removal of the detector head.

4. Setup and Installation

Installation of the FSP-951 detector requires a compatible Notifier mounting base (e.g., B501, B224RB, B224BI, B200S, B200SR). Ensure the mounting location complies with all applicable codes and provides optimal smoke detection coverage.

4.1 Mounting the Base

  1. Secure the detector mounting base to a standard electrical box or directly to the ceiling using appropriate fasteners.
  2. Ensure the base is firmly attached and level.

4.2 Wiring

Wire the mounting base according to the specific wiring diagram provided in the control panel's installation manual and the detector base's instructions. The FSP-951 uses two-wire addressable communication. Ensure correct polarity and secure all wire connections.

4.3 Installing the Detector Head

  1. Align the detector head with the mounting base.
  2. Rotate the detector clockwise until it drops into place and locks securely. A slight click may be heard.
  3. Verify that the detector is firmly seated and cannot be easily removed without using the removal tool or by twisting counter-clockwise.

5. Operating Instructions

Once properly installed and powered, the FSP-951 detector continuously monitors the air for the presence of smoke. It communicates its status to the fire alarm control panel using the FlashScan protocol.

5.1 LED Indicators

  • Normal Operation: The detector's LED will flash periodically (e.g., every few seconds) to indicate normal communication with the control panel.
  • Alarm Condition: If smoke is detected, the LED will illuminate steadily (or flash rapidly, depending on panel programming) and the detector will send an alarm signal to the control panel.
  • Trouble Condition: A specific flash pattern or no illumination may indicate a trouble condition (e.g., dirty chamber, internal fault). Refer to the control panel's display for detailed trouble messages.

5.2 Testing the Detector

Regular testing of the smoke detector is crucial to ensure its proper operation. Consult NFPA 72 for recommended testing frequencies.

  • Functional Test: Use an approved aerosol smoke stimulant to test the detector. Apply the stimulant to the detector's sensing chamber until an alarm is initiated.
  • Magnet Test: Some bases allow for a magnet test. Refer to the base's documentation for details.
  • After testing, ensure the detector resets and returns to normal supervisory mode.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and reliable operation of your FSP-951 detector.

6.1 Cleaning

Dust and debris can accumulate in the sensing chamber, leading to false alarms or reduced sensitivity. Clean the detector annually or as needed.

  1. Disconnect power to the fire alarm control panel.
  2. Gently twist the detector head counter-clockwise to remove it from the mounting base.
  3. Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove dust from the exterior and the sensing chamber openings.
  4. Do not use cleaning solvents or liquids on the detector.
  5. Reinstall the detector head by aligning it with the base and twisting clockwise until it locks.
  6. Restore power to the control panel and verify normal operation.

6.2 Replacement

Smoke detectors have a limited lifespan. Consult the manufacturer's recommendations and local codes for the recommended replacement interval, typically 10 years from the date of manufacture.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with the FSP-951 detector.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Detector LED not flashingNo power, wiring error, detector not seated correctly, or internal fault.Check power to the panel. Verify wiring connections. Ensure detector is fully seated on its base. If problem persists, replace detector.
False alarmsDust/debris in chamber, high humidity, cooking fumes, or improper placement.Clean the detector (see Section 6.1). Relocate if frequently exposed to non-fire smoke sources.
Trouble signal on panelDirty chamber, internal fault, or communication issue.Check the control panel display for specific trouble codes. Clean the detector. If trouble persists, replace the detector.
Detector does not alarm during testInsufficient smoke stimulant, faulty detector, or wiring issue.Ensure adequate smoke stimulant is applied. Verify wiring. Replace detector if necessary.

For persistent issues, consult a qualified fire alarm technician or contact Notifier technical support.
