Important Safety Warnings

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and sturdy footwear.
  • Operate the compactor only in well-ventilated areas to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Ensure the work area is clear of bystanders, especially children and pets.
  • Do not operate the machine if you are fatigued or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Before performing any maintenance or adjustments, always turn off the engine and allow it to cool.
  • Proposition 65 Warning: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

Setup

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the plate compactor and all components from the packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage. Report any damage immediately to WEN customer service.
  2. Handle Assembly: Attach the handle assembly to the main unit using the provided hardware. Ensure all bolts are securely tightened. The unique swing-over handle design allows for easy adjustment.
  3. Add Engine Oil: Before first use, fill the engine crankcase with the recommended engine oil (refer to engine manual for specific type and capacity). The engine features a low-oil shutdown to protect it, but proper oil level is crucial for operation.
  4. Add Fuel: Fill the fuel tank with fresh, unleaded gasoline. The fuel tank capacity is approximately 1 gallon. Do not overfill. Ensure the fuel cap is securely fastened.
  5. Check Air Filter: Ensure the air filter is clean and properly installed. Refer to the maintenance section for air filter maintenance.

Operating Instructions

  1. Starting the Engine:
    • Ensure the fuel valve is in the "ON" position.
    • Move the choke lever to the "CHOKE" position (cold engine start).
    • Set the throttle lever to the "FAST" position.
    • Pull the recoil starter handle firmly and smoothly until the engine starts.
    • Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the "RUN" position.
  2. Compacting:
    • Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes.
    • Guide the compactor over the material to be compacted. The machine will move forward on its own due to vibration.
    • Make overlapping passes to ensure uniform compaction.
    • For deeper compaction, multiple passes may be required.
  3. Maneuvering: The swing-over handle allows for easy directional changes and maneuvering in tight spaces. Adjust the handle position as needed for comfort and control.
  4. Stopping the Engine:
    • Move the throttle lever to the "SLOW" or "IDLE" position.
    • Turn the engine switch to the "OFF" position.
    • Close the fuel valve.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of your plate compactor.

  • Engine Oil: Check engine oil level before each use. Change oil after the first 5 hours of operation, then every 25-50 hours or seasonally.
  • Air Filter: Clean or replace the air filter regularly, especially when operating in dusty conditions. A clogged air filter can reduce engine performance.
  • Spark Plug: Inspect the spark plug annually or every 100 hours. Clean or replace as needed.
  • Fuel System: Drain the fuel tank and carburetor if storing the compactor for an extended period (over 30 days) to prevent fuel degradation.
  • General Cleaning: Keep the compactor clean, especially the engine cooling fins and the compaction plate. Remove any accumulated dirt or debris.
  • Storage: Store the compactor in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
