Tech 21 FlyRig 5 v2 Multi-FX Pedal User Manual

Comprehensive Guide for Operation and Maintenance

Introduction

The Tech 21 Fly Rig 5 v2 is a compact, all-analog multi-effects pedal designed to provide a comprehensive suite of guitar tones in a portable format. It integrates essential effects and amplifier emulation, making it suitable for direct recording, live performance, or as a core component of a larger pedalboard. This unit features a dual-voiced overdrive section, integrated SansAmp technology for authentic amplifier emulation, two distinct reverb types, an analog delay with tap tempo, an effects loop, and a chromatic tuner.

The Fly Rig 5 v2 is engineered for versatility and ease of use, offering a wide range of sonic possibilities from clean tones to high-gain saturation, all within a single, durable enclosure.

Setup

Proper setup ensures optimal performance and sound quality from your Fly Rig 5 v2.

Power Connection

Connect the included 9V DC power supply to the "9V DC" input jack located on the rear of the unit. Ensure the power supply is center-negative and provides at least 150mA. Using an incorrect power supply can damage the unit.

Audio Connections

  • Input (IN): Connect your guitar or other instrument to the 1/4-inch input jack on the right side of the unit.
  • Output (OUT): Connect the 1/4-inch output jack on the rear to your amplifier's input, a power amplifier, or an audio interface.
  • Effects Loop (SEND/RETURN): The 1/4-inch SEND and RETURN jacks allow for integration of external effects pedals. Connect the SEND to the input of your external pedal and the output of your external pedal to the RETURN. This loop is positioned after the SansAmp section and before the delay/reverb.
  • XLR Output: For direct connection to a mixing console, PA system, or recording interface, use the balanced XLR output. This output includes speaker emulation.

Operating Instructions

The Fly Rig 5 v2 is divided into several independent sections, each with dedicated controls and footswitches.

SansAmp Section

This section provides all-analog amplifier emulation, offering a wide range of clean and overdriven tones. It features two distinct voicings: Blonde and Plexi/Cali.

  • Blonde/Tuner Footswitch: Activates the Blonde amplifier emulation, inspired by classic American clean tones. Holding this footswitch activates the chromatic tuner.
  • Plexi Footswitch: Activates the Plexi-style overdrive, offering British-inspired crunch. This can be combined with the Blonde section for layered tones.
  • Level: Controls the overall output volume of the SansAmp section.
  • High/Mid/Low: Active tone controls for shaping the treble, midrange, and bass frequencies.
  • Drive: Adjusts the amount of gain and overdrive.
  • Tone: A high-cut filter that can smooth out the top end, particularly useful for higher gain settings.
  • Pre/Post Switch: Determines whether the SansAmp section's speaker emulation is applied before or after the effects loop.
  • Cali Switch: Toggles between Plexi and Cali (high-gain, modern American) voicings for the Plexi section.

Boost Section

The dedicated Boost section provides up to 12dB of clean boost, ideal for solos or pushing the front end of an amplifier.

  • Boost Footswitch: Engages or disengages the boost function.
  • Boost Knob: Controls the amount of boost applied.

EFX Section (Delay & Reverb)

This section features an analog-voiced delay and two types of reverb.

  • Tap/Reverb Footswitch: Taps in the tempo for the delay effect. Holding this footswitch activates the reverb effect.
  • Delay Controls:
    • Level: Adjusts the volume of the delay repeats.
    • Repeats: Controls the number of delay repeats.
    • Time: Sets the delay time. Can also be set via the Tap footswitch.
    • Drift: Adds a subtle modulation or "warble" to the delay repeats, mimicking vintage analog delays.
    • 8th Switch: Toggles between quarter note and dotted eighth note subdivisions for the tapped tempo.
  • Reverb Controls:
    • Reverb: Controls the mix level of the reverb effect.
    • XLR Size Switch: Toggles between two reverb room sizes (small and large) for the XLR output.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Tech 21 Fly Rig 5 v2, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or excessive moisture, as these can damage the finish and internal components.
  • Storage: Store the unit in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. When not in use, it is recommended to disconnect the power supply.
  • Transportation: When transporting the Fly Rig, use a padded gig bag or case to protect it from physical impact.
  • Power Supply: Always use the original or a compatible 9V DC center-negative power supply. Incorrect power can lead to malfunction or permanent damage.
  • Footswitches and Knobs: Periodically check that all footswitches and control knobs operate smoothly and are free from debris.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Fly Rig 5 v2, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No power/Unit does not turn on.Incorrect power supply, faulty power cable, or power outlet issue.Ensure the correct 9V DC center-negative power supply is used and properly connected. Test the power outlet with another device. Try a different power cable if available.
No sound output.Incorrect cable connections, low volume settings, or inactive effect.Verify all audio cables are securely connected to the correct input/output jacks. Check the Level knobs on the Fly Rig and your amplifier. Ensure the active section (e.g., SansAmp) is engaged.
Excessive noise or hum.Ground loop, faulty cables, or interference from other electronics.Use high-quality shielded cables. Try isolating the power supply from other devices. Ensure proper grounding of all equipment. Move the unit away from sources of electromagnetic interference (e.g., power transformers, fluorescent lights).
Effects not engaging.Footswitch malfunction or incorrect settings.Press the footswitch firmly. Check the corresponding control knobs to ensure the effect level is not set to zero.
Tuner not responding.Input signal too low or faulty instrument cable.Ensure your instrument is properly connected and producing a strong signal. Try a different instrument cable.
