1. Introduction

The Autel MaxiLink ML629 is an advanced OBD2 scanner designed for DIYers and professional mechanics. This manual will guide you through the setup, operation, and maintenance of your ML629 scanner.

2. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your Autel ML629 scanner:

  1. Unboxing: The ML629 comes with the scanner unit, an OBDII cable, a USB cable, and a quick reference guide, all neatly packed in a durable carrying case.
  2. Connect OBDII Cable: Attach the OBDII cable to the top port of the ML629 scanner. Ensure the screws are tightened for a secure connection.
  3. Locate Vehicle's OBDII Port: The OBDII port is typically located under the dashboard on the driver's side.
  4. Connect to Vehicle: Plug the OBDII cable into your vehicle's OBDII port.
  5. Power On: Turn your vehicle's ignition to the "ON" position (second position) to provide power to the scanner. The ML629 will automatically boot up.

3. Operating Instructions

The ML629 offers various diagnostic functions accessible through its intuitive menu.

3.1. System Diagnosis (Engine, Transmission, ABS, SRS)

This tool provides quick access to diagnose four critical vehicle systems:

  • Engine: Read and clear engine fault codes (CEL).
  • Transmission (AT): Diagnose automatic transmission issues.
  • SRS (Airbag): Check and clear Supplemental Restraint System codes.
  • ABS/TCS/VSA: Diagnose Anti-lock Braking System, Traction Control System, and Vehicle Stability Assist issues.

To perform a system diagnosis:

  1. From the main menu, select "Scan".
  2. Choose your vehicle's region (Asian, European, USA) and then the specific manufacturer (e.g., Acura, Ford).
  3. Select "Control Unit" to access the system menu.
  4. Choose the system you wish to diagnose (e.g., ENGINE, AT, SRS, ABS/TCS/VSA).
  5. The scanner will communicate with the vehicle and display fault codes or system status.

3.2. Full OBD2 Functions

The ML629 supports all 10 OBDII test modes to accurately determine the cause of the Check Engine Light (CEL):

  • Read Codes: Displays Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
  • Erase Codes: Clears DTCs and resets monitors.
  • Live Data: View real-time PID data of multiple sensors and components in text & graph modes.
  • Freeze Frame: Records vehicle parameters when a fault occurs.
  • I/M Readiness: Checks if emission-related monitors are ready for inspection.
  • O2 Sensor Test: Retrieves O2 sensor monitoring test results.
  • On-Board Monitor Test: Retrieves test results for emission-related powertrain components.
  • EVAP System Leak Test: Initiates a test for the evaporative emission system.
  • Vehicle Information (VIN, CALID, CVN): Retrieves vehicle identification number and calibration IDs.

To access these functions, select "OBDII/EOBD" from the main menu.

3.3. DTC Lookup

The ML629 has a built-in DTC library allowing you to look up diagnostic trouble code definitions directly on the device, eliminating the need for external searches.

4. Maintenance

  • Keep the device clean and free from dust and moisture.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Regularly check the OBDII cable for any signs of wear or damage.

5. Troubleshooting

Here are solutions for common issues you might encounter:

  • Scanner Not Powering On: Ensure the OBDII cable is securely connected to both the scanner and the vehicle's port. Verify the vehicle's ignition is in the "ON" position.
  • Communication Error: Check the vehicle's battery voltage. Ensure the vehicle's ignition is on but the engine is not running during diagnosis.
  • VSA/ABS/SRS Light Remains On After Repair: If you have replaced components related to VSA, ABS, or SRS and the warning light persists, you may need to perform a "Neutral Test" or clear permanent fault codes. First, clear all existing fault codes from the system. Then, if applicable, perform the "Neutral Test" function found under the ABS/TCS/VSA system menu to reprogram the system.
  • Seatbelt Buckle Fault Codes (e.g., 61-10, 62-10): These are often permanent DTCs related to the seatbelt buckle switches. The scanner can read and clear these codes. If the issue persists, the buckle switch may need replacement.
