1. Product Overview
The CONTEC CMS 5100 is a compact patient monitor designed for measuring SpO2 (blood oxygen saturation) and NIBP (non-invasive blood pressure). This device is intended for use by trained personnel for continuous or spot-check monitoring of adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients in various clinical settings. It features a clear display for vital signs and an intuitive interface for ease of use.

4.2. Sensor Connection
Proper connection of sensors is crucial for accurate measurements.
- NIBP Cuff: Connect the NIBP extension tube to the NIBP port on the side of the monitor. Then, connect the NIBP cuff to the other end of the extension tube. Ensure a secure, airtight connection.
- SpO2 Probe: Connect the SpO2 probe cable to the dedicated SpO2 port on the side of the monitor. Ensure the connector is fully inserted.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Power On/Off
- To Power On: Press and hold the power button (usually located on the front or side) until the display illuminates.
- To Power Off: Press and hold the power button until the device shuts down. Confirm any shutdown prompts if they appear.
5.2. NIBP Measurement
- Apply the NIBP cuff to the patient's arm, ensuring it is snug but not overly tight, and positioned correctly over the brachial artery.
- Select the appropriate patient mode (Adult, Pediatric, Neonatal) if available.
- Press the NIBP START/STOP button to initiate a blood pressure measurement. The cuff will inflate and then slowly deflate.
- The systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure (MAP) values will be displayed on the screen once the measurement is complete.
5.3. SpO2 Measurement
- Attach the SpO2 probe to the patient's finger (or appropriate site for pediatric/neonatal patients). Ensure the probe is securely placed and the light emitter/detector are aligned.
- The monitor will automatically begin displaying SpO2 percentage and pulse rate (PR) once a stable signal is detected.
- Observe the plethysmograph waveform on the display for signal quality.
5.4. Display Information
The monitor's display provides real-time vital sign data and device status.

Figure 5.1: The monitor's display showing numerical values for NIBP (SYS, DIA, MAP), SpO2, and PR, along with a plethysmograph waveform.
- NIBP: Displays Systolic (SYS), Diastolic (DIA), and Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) in mmHg.
- SpO2: Shows blood oxygen saturation percentage.
- PR: Indicates Pulse Rate in beats per minute (bpm).
- Waveform: A graphical representation of the SpO2 signal (plethysmograph).
- Battery Indicator: Shows the current battery level.
6. Maintenance
6.1. Cleaning
- Wipe the monitor's exterior with a soft cloth dampened with a mild detergent or medical-grade disinfectant.
- Do not immerse the device in liquids.
- Clean sensors (NIBP cuff, SpO2 probe) according to their specific cleaning instructions to prevent cross-contamination.
6.2. Battery Care
- Recharge the Lithium Polymer battery regularly to maintain its lifespan.
- If the device will not be used for an extended period, store it with a partial charge (around 50%) and recharge every few months.
- Replace the battery if its capacity significantly diminishes.
6.3. Storage
- Store the monitor and accessories in a clean, dry environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Keep the device protected from dust and moisture.
7. Troubleshooting
Refer to the following table for common issues and their potential solutions.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Monitor does not power on. | Low battery or no power connection. | Connect the AC adapter and ensure it is plugged into a working outlet. Allow battery to charge. |
| NIBP measurement fails or is inconsistent. | Cuff improperly applied, tube kinked, or patient movement. | Re-apply cuff correctly, check tube for obstructions, ensure patient is still. |
| SpO2 readings are unstable or absent. | Probe improperly placed, patient movement, or poor perfusion. | Re-position the SpO2 probe, minimize patient movement, ensure adequate blood flow to the measurement site. |
| Display is dim or unresponsive. | Low battery or device malfunction. | Charge the battery. If problem persists, contact customer support. |
