Setup and Installation
Before installing the free motion darning foot, ensure your sewing machine is turned off and unplugged for safety.
- Prepare your machine: Lower the feed dog on your sewing machine. If your machine does not have a feed dog drop mechanism, attach a darning plate over the feed teeth.
- Attach the darning foot: Attach the darning foot to the presser bar of your sewing machine. Ensure the lever on the darning foot is positioned correctly over the needle clamp screw.
- Needle and Thread: Insert an appropriate needle for your fabric and thread your machine as usual.
Operating Instructions for Free Motion Darning/Quilting
This foot is designed for "Against The Fabric" free motion darning, meaning the foot hovers just above the fabric, allowing you to move the fabric freely in any direction.

Diagram illustrating the preparation for free motion darning, including stitch type (zigzag or straight), stitch length (any), and stitch width (0-7 for zigzag). It also shows the darning foot attached to a sewing machine.
- Fabric Preparation: Draw an outline for your darning or quilting design onto the fabric using tailor's chalk or a washable fabric marker. Place the fabric under the needle.
- Machine Settings:
- Set your machine to a zigzag or straight stitch.
- Set the stitch length to "Any" (or 0, depending on your machine, as you will be controlling the stitch length by moving the fabric).
- For zigzag, set the stitch width between 0 and 7, as desired.
- Stitching: At a medium speed, begin stitching. Guide the fabric carefully by hand, following your marked outline or creating your free motion design. The foot will move up and down with the needle, but it will not hold the fabric down, allowing for free movement.
- Completion: After free hand embroidery or darning is completed, raise the feed dog or remove the darning plate to return to normal sewing operations.
Maintenance and Care
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your DREAMSTITCH presser foot:
- Clean the foot regularly with a soft, dry cloth to remove lint and dust.
- Store the presser foot in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Avoid dropping the foot, as this may cause damage to its delicate mechanisms.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues while using the presser foot, consider the following:
- Skipped Stitches: Ensure the needle is correctly inserted and is the appropriate type and size for your fabric. Check that the darning foot is securely attached and the lever is properly positioned over the needle clamp screw.
- Fabric Not Moving Freely: Verify that the feed dogs are lowered or covered by a darning plate. Ensure there is no obstruction preventing the fabric from moving smoothly.
- Uneven Stitches: Practice maintaining a consistent speed and fabric movement. Ensure your machine's tension settings are appropriate for your thread and fabric.
