4. Setup

4.1 Installation

  1. Mounting: Securely mount the bilge pump in the lowest part of the bilge where water collects. Ensure it is level and stable.
  2. Wiring: Connect the pump to your boat's 12-volt DC power source. Follow the wiring diagram provided in the full installation manual. Ensure all connections are watertight.
  3. Hose Connection: Attach the appropriate discharge hose to the pump's threaded discharge port. The pump comes with various fittings (1" NPT discharge, 1" and 1 1/8" screw-on hose barb ports) to simplify installation. Route the hose to a suitable through-hull fitting above the waterline.
  4. Testing: After installation, test the pump by adding water to the bilge to ensure it activates and removes water correctly.

5. Operating Instructions

The Rule-Mate RM1500A operates automatically, requiring no manual intervention for typical use. Its integrated water level sensor detects the presence of water and activates the pump accordingly.

  • Automatic Activation: The pump will activate automatically when the water level in the bilge reaches approximately 2-3/4 inches (70mm).
  • Automatic Shut-off: The pump will automatically shut off when the water level drops to approximately 5/8 inches (16mm), optimizing efficiency and preserving battery life.
  • Backup Mode: In the event of debris interfering with normal operation, the pump features a backup mode. It will cycle every 2.5 minutes to attempt to clear any obstructions and continue pumping.
  • Eco-Friendly Technology: The pump utilizes 'field effect' technology, which distinguishes water from oil, preventing false starts and ensuring the pump only activates when water is present.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your bilge pump.

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the pump, wiring, and hose connections for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion.
  • Clean Bilge Area: Keep the bilge area clean and free of debris, oil, and other contaminants that could clog the pump intake or interfere with the sensor.
  • Check Intake Screen: Ensure the intake screen at the base of the pump is clear of any obstructions. Clean it regularly to maintain maximum flow.
  • Test Operation: Manually test the pump's operation periodically by adding water to the bilge to confirm automatic activation and shut-off.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Rule-Mate RM1500A, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Pump does not turn onNo power, blown fuse, loose wiring, clogged intake, faulty sensor.Check power supply and fuse. Inspect and tighten all wiring connections. Clear any debris from the intake screen. If sensor is suspected, consult a professional.
Pump runs continuouslySensor malfunction, airlock in hose, backflow, pump not mounted level.Ensure pump is level. Check for airlocks in the discharge hose. Verify sensor is clean and functioning. Install a check valve if backflow is an issue.
Pump runs but no water is dischargedClogged discharge hose, pump airlocked, impeller damaged.Clear any blockages in the discharge hose. Remove pump and clear any airlocks. Inspect impeller for damage.
Pump cycles on/off frequentlySmall amount of water in bilge, sensor sensitivity, minor leak. This can be normal for small water accumulation. Ensure no small leaks are causing constant activation.
