Important Safety Instructions
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and injury to persons, including the following:
- Read all instructions before using the iron.
- Use the iron only for its intended use.
- To protect against a risk of electric shock, do not immerse the iron in water or other liquids.
- The iron should always be turned to OFF before plugging or unplugging from outlet. Never yank cord to disconnect from outlet; instead, grasp plug and pull to disconnect.
- Do not allow cord to touch hot surfaces. Let iron cool completely before putting away. Loop cord loosely around iron when storing.
- Always disconnect iron from electrical outlet when filling with water or emptying, and when not in use.
- Do not operate iron with a damaged cord or if the iron has been dropped or damaged. To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble the iron; take it to a qualified serviceman for examination and repair. Incorrect reassembly can cause a risk of electric shock when the iron is used.
- Close supervision is necessary for any appliance being used by or near children. Do not leave iron unattended while connected or on an ironing board.
- Burns can occur from touching hot metal parts, hot water, or steam. Use caution when you turn a steam iron upside down – there may be hot water in the reservoir.
- The iron must be used and rested on a stable surface.
- When placing the iron on its heel, ensure that the surface on which it is placed is stable.
Setup and First Use
1. Unpacking
Carefully remove the iron from its packaging. Retain all packaging materials for potential future transport or storage. Check for any visible damage. If any damage is observed, do not use the iron and contact customer support.
2. Filling the Water Tank
- Ensure the iron is unplugged from the power outlet.
- Open the water tank inlet cover, usually located at the front of the handle.
- Fill the water tank with clean tap water up to the 'MAX' indicator line. Do not overfill.
- Close the water tank inlet cover securely.

3. First Use Preparation
Before ironing clothes for the first time, it is recommended to iron an old piece of fabric to remove any manufacturing residues from the soleplate. This also helps to clean the steam vents.
Operating Instructions
1. Powering On and Temperature Selection
- Plug the iron into a suitable electrical outlet (240 Volts).
- Turn the temperature dial to the desired setting based on the fabric type. Refer to garment care labels for guidance. The iron will begin to heat up.
- Wait for the indicator light to turn off, signifying that the iron has reached the selected temperature.
2. Steam Functions
The Tefal FV1713 Virtuo offers various steam options for effective wrinkle removal.
- Continuous Steam: For most ironing tasks, select a steam setting on the steam control dial. The iron produces up to 24 g/min of continuous steam, penetrating fabric fibers to relax wrinkles.
- Steam Boost: For stubborn creases, press the steam boost button. This delivers a powerful burst of steam up to 90 g/min. Use this feature intermittently.
- Vertical Steam: To remove wrinkles from hanging garments or curtains, hold the iron vertically, approximately 10-20 cm away from the fabric, and press the steam boost button.

3. Anti-Drip Function
The anti-drip function prevents water from dripping onto your garments, especially at lower temperatures. If you notice water spots, ensure the iron has reached the correct temperature for steam generation.
4. Eco Mode
For energy saving, select the Eco mode setting. This reduces steam output and power consumption while still providing effective ironing results for suitable fabrics.
Care and Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Soleplate
Allow the iron to cool completely. Wipe the non-stick soleplate with a damp cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner if necessary. Do not use metallic or abrasive scouring pads or chemical cleaners as these can damage the soleplate surface.

2. Anti-Calc / Self-Cleaning Function
The iron is equipped with an anti-calc system to reduce limescale build-up. For optimal performance, regularly use the self-cleaning function as per the instructions below:
- Fill the water tank to the MAX level.
- Set the temperature dial to maximum.
- Plug in the iron and wait for the indicator light to turn off.
- Unplug the iron.
- Hold the iron horizontally over a sink.
- Press and hold the self-clean button (if available, otherwise refer to specific model instructions for anti-calc flush). Hot water and steam will be expelled from the soleplate, carrying away scale particles.
- Gently shake the iron until all water has been expelled.
- Plug the iron back in and let it heat up to dry the soleplate.
- Unplug and store once cool.
3. Storage
After each use, unplug the iron and allow it to cool completely. Empty any remaining water from the tank. Store the iron upright on its heel in a safe, dry place.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your iron, please refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Iron does not heat up. | Not plugged in; power outlet fault; temperature dial set to OFF. | Check power connection; test outlet with another appliance; turn temperature dial to a heat setting. |
| No steam or insufficient steam. | Water tank empty; temperature too low for steam; steam vents blocked. | Fill water tank; set temperature to a steam-appropriate level (usually 2-3 dots); perform self-cleaning. |
| Water drips from soleplate. | Temperature too low for steam (anti-drip not active); water tank overfilled. | Increase temperature; ensure water level is below MAX line. |
| White flakes or particles on clothes. | Limescale build-up in the iron. | Perform the anti-calc/self-cleaning function. |
If the problem persists after trying these solutions, please contact Tefal customer support.
