MXR Mini Iso-Brick Power Supply (Model M239) Instruction Manual

Brand: MXR

1. Introduction

The MXR Mini Iso-Brick Power Supply (Model M239) is designed to provide quiet, noise-free DC power to a wide range of guitar effects pedals. Its compact size makes it an ideal solution for small pedalboards or for powering a curated selection of essential pedals. This unit features fully isolated outputs to effectively eliminate ground loop noise, ensuring optimal audio performance.

The power supply includes five isolated outputs. Four of these outputs deliver 9 volts of power at 300mA each, suitable for most standard pedals. A fifth output offers versatility, providing either 9 volts or 18 volts at 800mA, accommodating pedals with higher power requirements. A splitter cable is included, allowing two pedals requiring the same voltage to be connected to a single output, provided the combined current draw does not exceed the output's rating. Integrated LEDs provide visual confirmation of solid connections, aiding in quick troubleshooting during setup or performance.

2. Setup

2.1 Unboxing and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove the MXR Mini Iso-Brick Power Supply and its accessories from the packaging. Inspect all components for any signs of damage. The package should include the Mini Iso-Brick unit, an 18V power adapter, and various power cables, including a splitter cable.

2.2 Connecting to Main Power

Connect the provided 18V DC power adapter to the 'INPUT' jack on the Mini Iso-Brick. Plug the adapter into a suitable AC power outlet. The unit is designed to operate with an 18V DC input.

2.3 Connecting Effects Pedals

Identify the power requirements (voltage and current draw) for each of your effects pedals. The Mini Iso-Brick offers:

  • Four (4) 9V outputs at 300mA each.
  • One (1) toggleable output for 9V or 18V at 800mA.

Use the appropriate power cables to connect your pedals to the corresponding outputs on the Mini Iso-Brick. Ensure that the voltage and current ratings of the pedal match the output you are using. For the toggleable output, select either 9V or 18V using the switch located next to the output port, based on your pedal's requirements.

If you need to power two pedals from a single output, use the included splitter cable. This is only recommended if both pedals require the same voltage and their combined current draw does not exceed the output's maximum current rating.

3. Operating

3.1 Powering On

Once all pedals are connected and the power adapter is plugged into an outlet, the Mini Iso-Brick will automatically power on. There is no separate on/off switch. The integrated LEDs on the unit will illuminate to indicate active connections and proper power delivery to each output.

3.2 Monitoring Connections

The LEDs next to each output port serve as visual indicators. If an LED is lit, it confirms that the output is active and providing power. This feature is particularly useful for quickly identifying any connection issues or power interruptions to individual pedals.

3.3 Voltage Selection

For the dedicated 9V/18V output, ensure the toggle switch is set to the correct voltage required by your connected pedal. Changing this setting while a pedal is connected is generally safe, but it is good practice to disconnect the pedal or power down the unit before adjusting to avoid potential damage to sensitive electronics.

4. Maintenance

The MXR Mini Iso-Brick Power Supply is designed for durability with its lightweight housing. To ensure longevity and optimal performance:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish.
  • Storage: Store the unit in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures and humidity.
  • Cable Management: Regularly check all power cables for wear and tear. Replace any damaged cables immediately to prevent electrical issues.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the unit has adequate ventilation, especially if mounted underneath a pedalboard, to prevent overheating.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your MXR Mini Iso-Brick Power Supply, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power to Pedal: Check if the LED for the specific output is illuminated. If not, ensure the power cable is securely connected to both the Iso-Brick and the pedal. Verify the main power adapter is firmly plugged into both the wall outlet and the Iso-Brick.
  • Pedal Not Functioning Correctly: Confirm that the pedal's voltage and current requirements are correctly matched to the Iso-Brick's output. For the 9V/18V output, double-check the toggle switch setting.
  • Excessive Noise/Hum: The fully isolated outputs are designed to prevent ground loop noise. If you experience noise, ensure all connections are secure and that no faulty cables are being used. Test pedals individually to isolate the source of the noise.
  • Using Splitter Cable: When using the splitter cable, ensure the combined current draw of the two connected pedals does not exceed the maximum current rating of the single output. Overloading an output can lead to unstable power or damage.
