Operating Instructions
Accessing DSM
Once DSM is installed, you can access the web-based interface by entering the NAS's IP address or hostname in your web browser. Log in with your administrator credentials.
Creating Storage Pools and Volumes
- Navigate to Storage Manager in DSM.
- Go to the Storage Pool section and click Create.
- Select the desired RAID type (e.g., RAID 5, RAID 6, SHR) and the drives to include.
- After creating the storage pool, go to the Volume section and click Create to create a new volume on the storage pool.
File Sharing and Access
- Shared Folders: Create shared folders via Control Panel > Shared Folder. Assign user permissions.
- File Station: Use File Station in DSM for web-based file management.
- Network Protocols: Access files via SMB/CIFS (Windows), AFP (macOS), NFS (Linux), FTP, or WebDAV.
Maintenance
- DSM Updates: Regularly check for and install DSM updates via Control Panel > Update & Restore to ensure security and access to new features.
- Drive Health: Monitor drive health using Storage Manager > HDD/SSD. Replace failing drives promptly.
- Data Backup: Implement a robust backup strategy using Synology's Hyper Backup or other backup solutions to protect your data.
- System Logs: Periodically review system logs (Log Center) for any unusual activity or errors.
- Physical Cleaning: Ensure the device's vents are clear of dust to maintain optimal airflow and prevent overheating.
Troubleshooting
- NAS not powering on:
- Check power cord connections and ensure power outlets are functional. Verify the power supply units are properly seated.
- Cannot find NAS on network:
- Ensure Ethernet cables are securely connected. Check network switch/router status. Try using Synology Assistant to locate the device. Verify network settings on the computer.
- Drive status LED indicates an error:
- Access Storage Manager in DSM to check the specific drive status. A blinking orange LED often indicates a failing or degraded drive. Replace the drive as soon as possible.
- Slow performance:
- Check network bandwidth utilization. Monitor CPU and RAM usage in Resource Monitor. Ensure drives are healthy and not overloaded. Consider adding an optional 10GbE NIC or M.2 SSD cache for improved performance.
