Model: 6502T

Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and efficient operation, setup, and maintenance of your WEN 6502T Benchtop Belt and Disc Sander. Please read all instructions carefully before use to ensure optimal performance and user safety.

General Safety Information

Always follow basic safety precautions when using power tools to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and serious personal injury. Keep your work area clean and well-lit. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and a dust mask. Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool.

Product Overview

The WEN 6502T is a versatile two-in-one sanding machine designed for precision sanding of wood and other materials. It features a powerful 4.3 Amp motor, a 4-inch by 36-inch sanding belt, and a 6-inch sanding disc, all mounted on a sturdy cast-iron base for stability and reduced vibration.

Setup

Your WEN 6502T Benchtop Belt and Disc Sander arrives mostly assembled. Before initial use, perform the following steps:

  1. Unpacking and Inspection: Carefully remove the sander from its packaging. Inspect all components for any signs of damage or loose parts. Ensure the disc head and drive belt are securely fastened. Refer to the included manual for detailed assembly diagrams.
  2. Positioning: Place the sander on a stable, level workbench. The heavy cast-iron base provides inherent stability, but securing it to the workbench is recommended for enhanced safety during operation.
  3. Dust Collection Connection: Connect a dust extractor to the 2.25-inch dust port located on the unit. This is crucial for effective dust management and maintaining air quality.
  4. Power Connection: Plug the sander into a grounded 120V power outlet.

Operation

Familiarize yourself with the controls and features before operating the sander.

Using the Belt Sander

  1. Adjusting Belt Angle: The sanding belt can be used horizontally or vertically. To adjust, loosen the appropriate locking mechanism (refer to your manual for exact location) and pivot the belt assembly to the desired angle (0 to 90 degrees). Securely tighten the locking mechanism before operation.
  2. Workpiece Placement: For horizontal sanding, place your workpiece on the flat surface of the belt. For vertical sanding, utilize the adjustable work table.

Using the Disc Sander

  1. Work Table Adjustment: The cast-aluminum work table for the 6-inch disc sander can be tilted to various angles. Use the adjustment knob to set the desired angle for your workpiece.
  2. Miter Gauge: Insert the miter gauge into the slot on the work table to guide your workpiece for precise angled sanding.
  3. Workpiece Placement: Gently press the workpiece against the rotating disc, ensuring even pressure for consistent results.

Powering On/Off

Locate the power switch on the front of the unit. Press to turn the sander ON, and press again to turn it OFF. Always ensure the workpiece is properly positioned and your hands are clear before powering on.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your sander.

  1. Changing Sanding Belts: To change the 4x36 inch belt, use the tension release lever to loosen the belt. Remove the old belt and slide on the new one, ensuring it is correctly aligned. Re-engage the tension lever.
  2. Changing Sanding Discs: The 6-inch sanding disc typically uses an adhesive backing. Carefully peel off the old disc and apply a new one, ensuring it is centered and free of air bubbles.
  3. Dust Port Cleaning: Regularly check and clear the 2.25-inch dust port for any blockages to maintain efficient dust extraction.
  4. Sanding Belt/Disc Cleaning: Use a specialized sandpaper cleaning stick (also known as an abrasive cleaning stick or rubber eraser) to remove accumulated resin and dust from the sanding belts and discs. This extends the life of your abrasives.
