4.3. Balancing the Tonearm
Proper tonearm balance is crucial for optimal sound clarity and to minimize wear on your records and stylus.
- Remove the stylus protector.
- Unlock the tonearm using the tonearm lock.
- Lift the cueing lever.
- Position the tonearm over the platter.
- While holding the headshell, lower the cueing lever without letting the needle touch the platter.
- Turn the counterweight until the tonearm floats parallel to the mat. It should be as level as possible.
- Once balanced, return the tonearm to the tonearm rest and lock it in place.
4.4. Setting Tracking Force and Anti-Skating
This is an important step for proper playback and stylus longevity.
- Turn only the counterweight indicator ring to '0' on the center line. Do not turn the entire counterweight.
- Turn the entire counterweight counter-clockwise until the number '2' is on the center line. This sets the tracking force to 2 grams, which is optimal for the Ortofon OM10 cartridge.
- Locate the small anti-skating dial next to the tonearm base. Set this dial to '2', matching the tracking force.

4.5. Leveling the Turntable
Use the included bubble level to ensure your turntable is perfectly level for optimal performance. Adjust the turntable's feet as needed.

4.6. Connecting to an Amplifier (Phono Preamp Not Included)
The Fluance RT82 does not include a built-in phono preamplifier. You will need an external phono preamplifier to connect your turntable to an amplifier or powered speakers. Connect the RCA cables from the turntable to the PHONO input of your preamplifier, and then from the preamplifier's output to an available line-level input (e.g., AUX, CD) on your amplifier or powered speakers. Connect the ground wire from the turntable to the ground terminal on your preamplifier or amplifier.

6. Maintenance
6.1. Cleaning
- Dust Cover: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the dust cover. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Plinth: Wipe the wood plinth with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals.
- Stylus: Gently brush the stylus from back to front using a soft stylus brush. Use a dedicated stylus cleaning fluid if necessary.
- Records: Keep your records clean using a record brush or cleaning kit to prevent dust buildup and improve sound quality.
6.2. Stylus Replacement
The Ortofon OM10 stylus has a lifespan that varies depending on usage. Replace the stylus when you notice a degradation in sound quality or after approximately 1000 hours of playback. Refer to Ortofon's guidelines for specific replacement instructions for the OM10 stylus.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound or very low volume | Incorrect connection to amplifier; no phono preamp; phono/line switch incorrect. | Ensure RCA cables are securely connected. Verify a phono preamp is used and connected correctly. Check if your amplifier has a dedicated PHONO input. |
| Distorted sound | Incorrect tracking force; worn stylus; dirty stylus/record. | Re-balance tonearm and set tracking force (2g for OM10). Clean stylus and record. Consider replacing stylus. |
| Skipping or jumping | Incorrect tracking force; turntable not level; dirty/damaged record. | Verify tracking force and anti-skating settings. Ensure turntable is level using the bubble level. Clean or inspect record for damage. |
| Humming noise | Ground wire not connected; interference. | Ensure ground wire is securely connected between turntable and amplifier/preamp. Move turntable away from other electronic devices. |
| Platter not spinning | Power not connected; belt dislodged or broken. | Check power adapter connection. Verify the drive belt is correctly seated around the platter and motor pulley. |
