2.2 Installing the Ink Cartridge

  1. Unscrew the barrel from the grip section by turning it counter-clockwise.
  2. Locate the small, pointed end of the ink cartridge.
  3. Insert the pointed end of the cartridge firmly into the feed nipple located inside the grip section until you feel a click and the cartridge is punctured.
  4. Allow a few minutes for the ink to flow down to the nib. Gently shake the pen or make a few strokes on scrap paper to encourage ink flow.
  5. Screw the barrel back onto the grip section by turning it clockwise until secure.

2.3 Using a Converter (Sold Separately)

If you prefer to use bottled ink, you can install a PILOT CON-40 or CON-70 converter. Follow the converter's instructions for filling with ink and then insert it into the pen as you would an ink cartridge.

3. Operating the Pen

3.1 Holding the Pen

The Kakuno features a hexagonal grip section designed to naturally guide your fingers into the correct writing position. The smiley face on the nib should always face upwards towards you when writing, ensuring the nib is oriented correctly for optimal ink flow and line quality.

3.2 Writing with Your Fountain Pen

Apply light pressure when writing. Fountain pens rely on capillary action for ink flow, so excessive pressure is not required and can damage the nib. The medium nib provides a smooth and consistent line suitable for various writing tasks.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning Your Pen

Regular cleaning helps maintain optimal performance and prevents ink clogs, especially when changing ink colors or if the pen has been unused for a period.

  1. Remove the ink cartridge or converter.
  2. Rinse the nib and grip section under cool, running water until the water runs clear.
  3. If using a converter, repeatedly draw and expel clean water through it until the water is clear.
  4. Gently wipe the nib and grip section with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  5. Allow all components to air dry completely before reassembling or installing a new ink cartridge/converter.

4.2 Storage

When not in use, always cap your fountain pen to prevent the nib from drying out. Store the pen horizontally to ensure the feed remains saturated with ink, which helps with consistent starts.

  • No Ink Flow / Skipping:
    • Ensure the ink cartridge or converter is properly seated and punctured.
    • Check if the cartridge/converter is empty and replace or refill as needed.
    • The nib might be dry. Gently touch the nib to a damp paper towel to draw ink down.
    • The feed might be clogged. Perform a thorough cleaning as described in Section 4.1.
  • Leaking Ink:
    • Ensure the barrel is screwed on tightly.
    • Check for cracks in the barrel or grip section.
    • Avoid shaking the pen vigorously.
