Setup and Installation
- Power Off Radio: Ensure your two-way radio is powered off before attaching or detaching the antenna.
- Identify Connector: Locate the antenna connector on your radio. The Retevis antenna uses an SMA-Female connector.
- Attach Antenna: Carefully align the SMA-Female connector of the antenna with the SMA-Male connector on your radio. Gently screw the antenna clockwise until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the connector.
- Adjust Length: For standard use or when a compact size is preferred, keep the antenna retracted (5.5 inches). For improved range and signal quality, gently pull the whip section of the antenna upwards to extend it to its full length (18.5 inches).
- Power On Radio: Once the antenna is securely attached and adjusted, you may power on your radio.

Operating Considerations
While the antenna itself is a passive component, its effective operation is crucial for your radio's performance. Consider the following:
- Antenna Length: Use the extended length (18.5 inches) for maximum range and clarity, especially in open areas or when communicating over longer distances. The retracted length (5.5 inches) is suitable for shorter-range communication or when portability and discretion are priorities.
- Vertical Orientation: For optimal performance, ensure the antenna is as vertical as possible during operation.
- Obstructions: Avoid operating near large metal objects, buildings, or dense foliage, as these can significantly reduce signal strength and range.
Maintenance
Proper care will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your antenna.
- Cleaning: Wipe the antenna with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and dirt. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Storage: When not in use, store the antenna in a clean, dry place, preferably retracted to protect the whip element.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect the antenna for any signs of damage, such as bends in the whip, cracks in the housing, or corrosion on the connector. Replace if significant damage is observed.
- Connector Care: Keep the SMA-Female connector clean and free of debris to ensure a good electrical connection with your radio.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Poor signal reception/transmission | Antenna not fully extended; loose connection; damaged antenna; environmental obstructions. | Ensure antenna is fully extended for optimal range. Check that the antenna is securely tightened to the radio. Inspect for physical damage. Relocate to an area with fewer obstructions. |
| Antenna does not fit radio | Incorrect connector type. | Verify your radio requires an SMA-Female antenna. This antenna is SMA-Female. If your radio has an SMA-Female connector, you may need an adapter (not included) or a different antenna. |
| Antenna whip is bent or stuck | Physical damage or debris. | Attempt to gently straighten the whip. If stuck, check for debris. If severely damaged, replace the antenna. |
