4.2. Connecting Test Leads

For voltage, resistance, capacitance, frequency, continuity, and diode tests, connect the test leads as follows:

  • Insert the black test lead into the COM (common) input jack.
  • Insert the red test lead into the VΩCAPHz%TEMP input jack.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. General Operation

Turn the rotary switch to the desired function. The meter will typically operate in auto-ranging mode. Use the MODE, RANGE, REL, and HOLD buttons for specific functions as described below.

5.2. Measuring AC Current (Clamp Function)

To measure AC current without breaking the circuit:

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the 40A~ or 400A~ position.
  2. Open the clamp jaw by pressing the trigger.
  3. Enclose only one conductor of the circuit with the clamp jaw. Ensure the jaw is fully closed.
  4. Read the AC current value on the display.

Figure 4: Angled view of the VC-522, illustrating the clamp jaw mechanism used for current measurement.

5.3. Measuring AC/DC Voltage

To measure voltage:

  1. Connect the test leads as described in Section 4.2.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the V~ (AC Voltage) or V- (DC Voltage) position.
  3. Connect the test leads in parallel to the circuit or component you wish to measure.
  4. Read the voltage value on the display.

5.4. Measuring Resistance (Ω)

To measure resistance:

  1. Ensure the circuit is de-energized and all capacitors are discharged.
  2. Connect the test leads as described in Section 4.2.
  3. Turn the rotary switch to the position.
  4. Connect the test leads across the component to be measured.
  5. Read the resistance value on the display.

5.5. Continuity Test

To check for circuit continuity:

  1. Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
  2. Connect the test leads as described in Section 4.2.
  3. Turn the rotary switch to the position and press the MODE button until the continuity symbol (♫) appears.
  4. Connect the test leads across the circuit or component.
  5. An audible beep indicates continuity (low resistance).

5.6. Diode Test

To test diodes:

  1. Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
  2. Connect the test leads as described in Section 4.2.
  3. Turn the rotary switch to the position and press the MODE button until the diode symbol (▲) appears.
  4. Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode of the diode.
  5. The display will show the forward voltage drop. Reverse the leads; an open circuit (OL) indicates a good diode.

5.7. Measuring Capacitance (CAP)
