Johnson Controls F61TB-9100 Flow Switch User Manual

Model: F61TB-9100

1. Introduction and Overview

The Johnson Controls F61TB-9100 Flow Switch is designed for reliable liquid flow detection in various applications. It is suitable for use with water, sea water, swimming pool water, ethylene glycol, and other liquids that are not harmful to the internal components of the switch. This device features SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw) contacts, allowing it to energize one device and de-energize another from the same power source when the liquid flow rate either exceeds or falls below a predefined set point.

Typical applications include compressor shutdown on liquid chiller systems, proving flow on electric immersion heaters, and providing signals or alarms when a condenser pump in a cooling system shuts down. The F61TB-9100 is a pipe-insert type flow switch, designed for easy mounting on top of the liquid line.

2. Product Features

  • Contact Type: SPDT snap acting switch for reliable operation.
  • Flow Range: Designed for low flow applications, from 0.04 dm³/s up to 48 dm³/s.
  • Protection Rating: IP67 rated, providing protection against dust ingress and temporary immersion in water, and is vapor proof.
  • Maximum Liquid Pressure: Capable of withstanding up to 20 Bar (290 PSI).
  • Wiring Connections: Utilizes screw terminals, accommodating wire sizes from 1 to 2.5 mm².

3. Safety Information

WARNING: Read all instructions carefully before installation and operation. Failure to follow these instructions could result in property damage, serious injury, or death.

  • Always disconnect power before installing or servicing the device to prevent electrical shock.
  • Installation and wiring must be performed by qualified personnel in accordance with all local and national electrical codes.
  • Ensure the liquid in the pipe is compatible with the brass contact material and other internal components of the switch.
  • Do not exceed the maximum liquid pressure of 20 Bar.
  • Verify that the paddle does not touch the pipe or any other obstruction within the pipe to ensure accurate flow detection.
  • Protect the device from physical damage during installation and operation.

4. Installation and Setup

4.1 Mounting

The F61TB-9100 is a pipe-insert type flow switch. It must be mounted on top of the liquid line. Ensure the arrow on the switch body points in the direction of the liquid flow. Proper orientation is critical for accurate operation.

The threaded brass section is designed for direct insertion into a pipe, and the black housing contains the electrical connections and adjustment mechanism.

4.2 Electrical Wiring

The switch features SPDT contacts. Wiring connections are made via screw terminals, which can accommodate wires from 1 to 2.5 mm². Refer to the specific wiring diagram provided with your unit for correct connection to your control system. Ensure all wiring complies with local electrical codes.

4.3 Flow Rate Adjustment

The F61TB-9100 is factory set at a minimal flow setting. If a higher flow rate is required for activation, the setting can be adjusted. To increase the required flow rate, turn the adjusting screw clockwise. This screw is located under the cover of the switch. Always ensure the system is depressurized and power is disconnected before making adjustments.

5. Operation

The F61TB-9100 operates by detecting the presence or absence of liquid flow. When liquid flows through the pipe at or above the set flow rate, the internal paddle is displaced, activating the SPDT switch contacts. Conversely, when the flow drops below the set rate, the paddle returns to its resting position, de-activating the contacts.

The SPDT contacts allow for flexible control: one circuit can be energized while another is de-energized, or vice-versa, based on the flow condition. This makes it suitable for various control and alarm functions.

6. Maintenance

The Johnson Controls F61TB-9100 Flow Switch is designed for minimal maintenance. However, periodic checks are recommended to ensure continued reliable operation:

  • Visual Inspection: Regularly inspect the switch for any signs of physical damage, corrosion, or leaks around the pipe connection.
  • Paddle Clearance: Ensure the paddle remains free from obstructions within the pipe. Accumulation of debris can impede its movement and affect accuracy.
  • Electrical Connections: Periodically check that all electrical connections are secure and free from corrosion.
  • Functionality Test: If possible and safe to do so, periodically test the switch's operation by varying the flow rate to confirm it activates and de-activates at the desired set points.

CAUTION: Always disconnect power and depressurize the system before performing any maintenance or inspection.

7. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Switch does not activate with flow.
  • Insufficient flow rate.
  • Paddle obstructed or damaged.
  • Incorrect wiring.
  • Faulty switch.
  • Increase flow rate or adjust set point (clockwise for higher flow).
  • Inspect and clear paddle; replace if damaged.
  • Verify wiring against diagram.
  • Test switch continuity; replace if necessary.
Switch remains activated without flow.
  • Paddle stuck or obstructed.
  • Incorrect wiring (e.g., normally open/closed confusion).
  • Faulty switch.
  • Inspect and clear paddle.
  • Review wiring diagram for correct contact usage.
  • Test switch continuity; replace if necessary.
Leaks at pipe connection.
  • Improper sealing or damaged threads.
  • Excessive pressure.
  • Re-seal connection with appropriate sealant; check threads.
  • Verify system pressure is within specifications (max 20 Bar).
