Behringer NEUTRON/BEH

Behringer Neutron Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer User Manual

Model: NEUTRON/BEH

1. Introduction and Overview

The Behringer Neutron is a paraphonic analog and semi-modular synthesizer designed for a wide range of sound creation. It features dual 3340 Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCOs), a multi-mode Voltage Controlled Filter (VCF), two Attack-Decay-Sustain-Release (ADSR) envelopes, a Bucket Brigade Delay (BBD) circuit, and an overdrive circuit. The unit is presented in a Euro rack compatible format, offering both standalone functionality and integration into larger modular systems.

Its semi-modular design allows for immediate sound generation without the need for patching, while the extensive patch bay provides advanced routing capabilities for complex sound design and integration with other modular equipment. The pure analog signal path ensures authentic vintage-style synthesis.

2. Key Features

  • 80HP Eurorack-sized Analog Monosynth Module with 2 Oscillators
  • Filter and Amplifier Envelopes
  • Lowpass/Highpass Voltage Controlled Filter (VCF)
  • 56 Patch Points for extensive modular connectivity
  • Control Voltage (CV) Input/Output capabilities

3. Setup

To set up your Behringer Neutron, follow these steps:

  1. Power Connection: Connect the provided 12V DC power adapter to the DC INPUT jack on the rear panel of the Neutron. Ensure the power switch is in the OFF position before connecting.
  2. Audio Output: Connect the OUTPUT jack on the rear panel to your audio interface, mixer, or amplifier using a 1/4-inch TS cable. For monitoring with headphones, connect your headphones to the PHONES jack and adjust the volume using the dedicated knob.
  3. MIDI Connection: For external control, connect your MIDI controller or computer to the MIDI IN port using a standard 5-pin DIN MIDI cable, or use a USB cable to connect to the USB port for MIDI over USB functionality.
  4. Initial Power On: Once all connections are secure, switch the power to the ON position. The unit is designed for immediate performance without initial patching.
  5. Eurorack Integration (Optional): The Neutron can be removed from its desktop case and mounted into a standard Eurorack system. Refer to the detailed instructions in the full manual for safe removal and installation procedures, including power connection within a Eurorack environment.

4. Operating Instructions

The Behringer Neutron offers an intuitive workflow for sound synthesis. The front panel is logically laid out with dedicated sections for oscillators, filter, envelopes, and effects.

4.1 Oscillators (OSC 1 & OSC 2)

  • Adjust TUNE and OCTAVE for pitch control.
  • Use the SHAPE knob to select different waveforms (e.g., sine, triangle, saw, square).
  • The WIDTH control adjusts the pulse width of the square wave.
  • Engage OSC SYNC to synchronize Oscillator 2 to Oscillator 1.
  • Activate PARAPHONIC mode to control both oscillators independently via MIDI, allowing for two-note polyphony.

4.2 Voltage Controlled Filter (VCF)

  • The MODE switch selects between low-pass and high-pass filter types.
  • Adjust FREQ for the filter cutoff frequency and RESO for resonance.
  • MOD DEPTH controls the intensity of modulation applied to the filter.

4.3 Envelopes (ENVELOPE 1 & ENVELOPE 2)

Two ADSR envelopes are available for shaping the amplitude and filter characteristics.

  • A (Attack): Controls the time it takes for the sound to reach its peak volume.
  • D (Decay): Controls the time it takes for the sound to fall from its peak to the sustain level.
  • S (Sustain): Controls the level at which the sound is held as long as a key is pressed.
  • R (Release): Controls the time it takes for the sound to fade to silence after the key is released.

4.4 Effects and Utilities

  • Overdrive: Adjust DRIVE, TONE, and LEVEL to add harmonic richness and distortion.
  • Delay: Control TIME, REPEATS, and MIX for the built-in Bucket Brigade Delay effect.
  • LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator): Adjust RATE and SHAPE to create rhythmic modulation.
  • Patch Bay: The 56-point patch bay allows for extensive signal routing and modulation, enabling complex sound design beyond the default semi-modular connections. Use 3.5mm patch cables for connections.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Behringer Neutron.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the synthesizer in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and excessive humidity.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check the official Behringer website for available firmware updates. Follow the provided instructions carefully for any update procedures to ensure proper functionality and access to new features.
  • Knob and Jack Care: The knobs are designed for durability and precise control. Avoid excessive force when turning or pulling them. Ensure patch cables are inserted and removed gently from the jacks.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Behringer Neutron, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Sound Output:
    • Verify power connection and ensure the unit is ON.
    • Check audio cable connections to your mixer/interface and ensure volume levels are adequate on both the Neutron and your receiving device.
    • Ensure the VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) is open or receiving a gate signal if patched.
  • MIDI Not Responding:
    • Confirm MIDI cables are correctly connected (MIDI OUT of controller to MIDI IN of Neutron).
    • Check the MIDI channel settings on both the Neutron (using the DIP switches on the rear) and your MIDI controller/software to ensure they match.
    • If using USB MIDI, ensure the correct drivers are installed on your computer and the USB connection is stable.
  • Unexpected Behavior / Glitches:
    • Perform a factory reset if available (refer to the full manual for specific instructions).
    • Check for and install the latest firmware update from the Behringer website, as this often resolves software-related issues.

For persistent issues, consult the comprehensive online manual or contact Behringer customer support.
