3. Product Components

The KwikSafety Cobra Web Self-Retracting Lifeline consists of the following key components:

  1. Swivel Top with Twist Lock Carabiner: A heavy-duty steel carabiner with a swivel top for easy attachment to an anchor point and to prevent lifeline twisting.
  2. Lightweight Durable Housing: A robust polymer casing that protects the internal retraction mechanism and webbing.
  3. Premium Webbing: A durable 3/4-inch polyester webbing line that extends and retracts, designed for no entanglement.
  4. External Shock Absorber: A component designed to deploy upon fall arrest, reducing the impact forces on the user.
  5. Steel Locking Snap Hook: A self-locking snap hook for secure attachment to a harness D-ring, with a gate strength of 3,600 lbs.

4. Setup and Connection

Proper setup is crucial for effective fall protection. Follow these steps to connect your self-retracting lifeline:

  1. Inspect Equipment: Before each use, thoroughly inspect the lifeline, harness, and anchor point for any signs of damage, wear, or malfunction. Ensure all labels are legible.
  2. Connect to Anchor: Attach the swivel top carabiner of the lifeline to a suitable anchor point. The anchor point must be capable of supporting 5,000 lbs (22.2 kN) per attached lifeline. Ensure the carabiner gate is fully closed and locked.
  3. Connect to Harness: Attach the steel locking snap hook of the lifeline to the dorsal D-ring of your full-body harness. Ensure the snap hook gate is fully closed and locked.
  4. Verify Connections: Double-check all connections to ensure they are secure and properly engaged.
  5. Clearance Requirements: Ensure adequate fall clearance below the work area. Refer to the fall distance diagram in Section 5 for guidance.

5. Operating Instructions

Once properly connected, the self-retracting lifeline allows for freedom of movement while maintaining constant tension on the webbing. This minimizes slack and reduces the potential for tripping hazards.

  • Movement: Move freely within the working area. The lifeline will automatically extend and retract with your movements.
  • Fall Arrest: In the event of a fall, the quick brake system will engage, arresting the fall within inches. The external shock absorber will deploy to dissipate energy and reduce impact forces on the body.
  • Post-Fall Procedure: After a fall, the lifeline must be immediately removed from service and inspected by a competent person. Do not reuse a lifeline that has arrested a fall.

Fall Distance Diagram

Understanding fall distance is critical for ensuring adequate clearance below the work area. The diagram below illustrates the components of total fall distance:

For the 10FT Single-Leg SRL, the average arresting force is 900 lbs. Ensure the total required clearance is maintained to prevent striking lower levels or obstructions.

6. Maintenance and Inspection

Regular maintenance and inspection are vital for the continued safe operation of your lifeline.

Pre-Use Inspection (Daily)

  • Check the housing for cracks, dents, or deformation.
  • Inspect the webbing for cuts, fraying, burns, chemical damage, or excessive wear.
  • Verify that the snap hook and carabiner operate smoothly, and their gates close and lock securely. Check for corrosion or deformation.
  • Ensure the shock absorber pack is intact and has not been deployed.
  • Confirm all labels are present and legible.

Periodic Inspection (Competent Person)

A competent person must perform a thorough inspection at least every six months, or more frequently depending on use and environmental conditions. Records of these inspections should be maintained.

Cleaning and Storage

  • Clean the lifeline with mild soap and water, then rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely away from direct sunlight or heat.
  • Store the lifeline in a cool, dry, clean area, away from direct sunlight, corrosive chemicals, and extreme temperatures.
  • Do not store in a manner that could cause damage or entanglement.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues with your KwikSafety Cobra Web Self-Retracting Lifeline, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Lifeline not retracting or extending smoothly: Check for obstructions in the webbing path or damage to the housing. Ensure the webbing is not twisted or tangled. If the issue persists, remove from service.
  • Snap hook or carabiner not closing/locking: Inspect for debris, damage, or corrosion. Clean if necessary. If damaged, remove from service.
  • Lifeline has arrested a fall: Immediately remove the device from service. It must not be reused.
  • Visible damage to any component: Remove the device from service immediately.
