3. Setup

3.1 Attaching the Reel to Your Rod

  1. Align the reel foot with the reel seat on your ice fishing rod.
  2. Tighten the reel seat's locking nut until the reel is securely fastened. Ensure there is no wobble.

3.2 Spooling Fishing Line

  1. Open the bail arm.
  2. Tie the fishing line to the spool using an arbor knot or similar secure knot.
  3. Close the bail arm.
  4. Hold the line under slight tension and begin reeling slowly, ensuring the line lays evenly on the spool. Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch from the rim.

3.3 Adjusting the Drag System

The drag system controls the amount of resistance the reel applies when a fish pulls line. It is located on the top of the spool.

  • Turn the drag knob clockwise to increase drag tension.
  • Turn the drag knob counter-clockwise to decrease drag tension.
  • Set the drag to approximately 25-30% of your line's breaking strength. This allows the line to be pulled out before breaking under stress.

3.4 Folding the Handle

To fold the handle for storage or transport:

  • Locate the push button on the handle arm (refer to Figure 4).
  • Press the button firmly and fold the handle inward towards the reel body.
  • To unfold, simply pull the handle away from the reel body until it locks into place.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Casting (Ice Fishing Specific)

For ice fishing, casting typically involves lowering your lure into a hole. The ICX II 500 is a spinning reel, which allows for controlled line release.

  1. Hold the rod with the reel facing downwards.
  2. Open the bail arm with your free hand.
  3. Allow the lure to drop into the ice hole. Control the descent by lightly touching the spool with your finger to slow or stop the line.
  4. Once the lure reaches the desired depth, close the bail arm.

4.2 Retrieving

To retrieve your line or lure:

  • Turn the reel handle clockwise to wind the line onto the spool.
  • Maintain a steady retrieve speed appropriate for your lure and fishing technique.

4.3 Using the Anti-Reverse Switch

The anti-reverse switch prevents the reel handle from turning backward, providing solid hook sets and control during a fight.

  • Locate the anti-reverse switch, typically found on the bottom of the reel body.
  • Flip the switch to the 'ON' position to engage the instant anti-reverse. This is recommended for most fishing situations.
  • Flipping the switch to the 'OFF' position allows the handle to turn backward, which may be used for specific techniques or to release line quickly.

4.4 Fighting a Fish

When a fish bites:

  • Set the hook with a firm upward or sideways motion of the rod.
  • Maintain tension on the line. Use the reel to retrieve line and the rod to pump the fish towards you.
  • Allow the drag system to work. If the fish pulls hard, the drag will release line to prevent breakage. Do not overtighten the drag during a fight.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will extend the life and performance of your Piscifun ICX II 500 reel.

5.1 Cleaning

  • After each use, especially in saltwater or slushy ice conditions, rinse the reel with fresh water.
  • Wipe the reel dry with a soft cloth.
  • Remove any visible dirt, sand, or debris from the exterior and moving parts.

5.2 Lubrication

  • Periodically apply a small amount of reel oil to the bail arm pivot points and handle knob.
  • Apply reel grease to the main gear and pinion gear if you disassemble the reel for deeper cleaning. (Note: Disassembly is recommended only for experienced users.)
  • Do not over-lubricate, as this can attract dirt.

5.3 Storage

  • Store the reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Consider using a reel cover or case to protect it from dust and physical damage.
  • Loosen the drag knob slightly during storage to prevent compression of the drag washers.

6. Troubleshooting

Below are common issues and their potential solutions:

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Line twists Improper spooling, retrieving lures that spin, or using worn line. Respool line correctly. Use swivels with spinning lures. Replace old line.
Drag slips or is inconsistent Drag washers are dry, dirty, or worn. Drag knob not tightened correctly. Clean and lightly grease drag washers. Ensure drag knob is properly adjusted. Replace worn washers.
Handle turns backward unexpectedly Anti-reverse switch is in the 'OFF' position or not fully engaged. Ensure the anti-reverse switch is firmly in the 'ON' position. If the issue persists, contact customer support.
Reel feels stiff or grinds Lack of lubrication, dirt/debris in gears, or damaged internal components. Clean and lubricate gears. If problem persists, professional service may be required.
