Figure 3.2.1: Engine components and controls. This image illustrates the throttle lever and fuel shut-off valve, crucial for engine operation.

Starting the Engine:

  1. Ensure the fuel shut-off valve is open.
  2. Set the throttle lever to the 'Choke' position for cold starts, or 'Fast' for warm starts.
  3. Engage the starter according to the specific instructions for your model.
  4. Once the engine starts, gradually move the throttle to the 'Run' position.

Stopping the Engine:

  1. Reduce engine speed to idle.
  2. Move the throttle lever to the 'Stop' position.
  3. Close the fuel shut-off valve if the tractor will be stored for an extended period.

Figure 4.1.1: Instruments and controls on the International Cub Cadet 109, 129, and 149 Tractors. This diagram labels key components such as the brake pedal, clutch pedal, speed control lever, and power take-off levers.

Key controls include the brake pedal, clutch pedal, speed control lever, and various lift and power take-off levers. Understand the function of each before operation.

4.2 Driving the Tractor

The combination clutch-brake pedal is used to disengage the engine from the transmission when shifting gears and to apply the brake. Always ensure the tractor is in neutral before starting the engine.

Page from the manual detailing instructions for driving the tractor, including clutch and gearshift operation.

Figure 4.2.1: Driving the Tractor instructions. This page provides details on clutch-brake pedal use, gearshift lever operation, and starting/stopping the tractor's movement.

Starting the Tractor Movement:

  1. Advance the throttle lever slightly.
  2. Disengage the clutch by pressing the clutch pedal all the way down, and release the brake lock. Move the gearshift lever to the desired speed.
  3. Start the tractor in motion by slowly releasing the clutch pedal and moving the throttle lever to the position where the engine operates best for the load to be handled.

Stopping the Tractor Movement:

  1. Disengage the clutch by pressing the pedal all the way down.
  2. Apply the brake to bring the tractor to a complete stop.

4.3 Rear Power Take-Off (PTO)

The rear power take-off provides power for various attachments. Always ensure the PTO is disengaged when not in use and when attaching or detaching implements.

Figure 4.3.1: Rear Power Take-Off operation. This illustration shows the PTO lever and provides steps for engaging and disengaging the PTO.

Operating the Rear Power Take-Off with Tractor Standing Still:

  1. Move the throttle lever back to the 'SLOW' speed.
  2. Depress the pedal and move the transmission gearshift lever to the neutral position.
  3. Move the shifter lever (Illus. 17A) for-ward to the engaged position.
  4. Move the throttle lever forward to the 'FAST' position and slowly release the pedal.

4.4 Hydraulic Lift

The hydraulic lift system controls the raising and lowering of implements. Refer to the specific controls for your model to operate the lift.

4.5 Front Wheels

Proper adjustment of the front wheels is crucial for steering and tire wear. This section covers toe-in adjustments and turning radius considerations.

Diagrams illustrating front wheel adjustments, including toe-in and quick attaching latch.

Figure 4.5.1: Front Wheels adjustments. This image shows how to measure and adjust front wheel toe-in and the components of the front quick attaching latch.

Front Wheel Toe-In Adjustment:

The front wheel toe-in dimension is approximately 1/8-inch closer in front than in the rear. To measure and adjust, use a chalk mark on the centerline of each tire. Adjust the tie rods until the correct toe-in is achieved.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and optimal performance of your tractor.

5.1 Engine Cooling and Air Cleaner

The tractor engine is air-cooled. Regular cleaning of the cooling fins and air cleaner is vital to prevent overheating and maintain engine efficiency.

Cleaning the Air Cleaner:

  1. Remove the air cleaner cover.
  2. Carefully remove the air cleaner element.
  3. Clean the element by tapping it gently or using compressed air (from the inside out). Do not wash the element.
  4. Inspect the element for damage. Replace if torn or excessively dirty.
  5. Reinstall the element and cover securely.

5.2 Lubrication

Proper lubrication is critical for reducing wear and ensuring smooth operation of moving parts. Refer to the lubrication table and guide for recommended lubricants and intervals.

Lubrication Table: Consult the specific lubrication table within your manual for detailed points, lubricant types, and frequency.

Lubrication Guide: Follow the guide for proper application techniques and quantities.
