2. Safety Information

WARNING: Read and understand all instructions and safety warnings before operating this heater. Failure to follow these instructions may result in fire, explosion, property damage, personal injury, or death.

General Safety Precautions:

  • Always operate the heater in a well-ventilated area.
  • Do not use this heater in living areas of homes, recreational vehicles, or other enclosed spaces without proper ventilation.
  • Ensure the heater is placed on a stable, level surface to prevent accidental tip-over.
  • Keep combustible materials at least 24 inches (61 cm) from the top and sides of the heater.
  • Never leave the heater unattended while in operation.
  • Do not block the air intake or exhaust openings.
  • Always inspect the heater and propane connections for leaks before each use.

Built-in Safety Features:

  • Accidental Tip-Over Safety Shut-Off: The heater is equipped with a sensor that automatically shuts off the unit if it is accidentally tipped over.
  • Low Oxygen Safety Shut-Off: An Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) is included to shut off the heater if oxygen levels in the area become too low.
  • Piezo Igniter: For safe and easy ignition without external flame.

3. Setup

Attaching a 1-Pound Propane Cylinder:

  1. Ensure the heater's control knob is in the "OFF" position.
  2. Locate the propane cylinder connection port on the side of the heater.
  3. Screw the 1-pound propane cylinder clockwise into the connection port until hand-tight. Do not overtighten.
  4. Check for any gas leaks by applying a soapy water solution to the connection. Bubbles indicate a leak.

Connecting to a 20-Pound Propane Tank (Optional):

For extended use, the heater can be connected to a 20-pound propane tank using an optional hose and filter (sold separately). It is crucial to use a Mr. Heater-approved hose and filter to prevent oil residue from clogging the heater's internal components.

  1. Ensure the heater's control knob is in the "OFF" position and the 20-pound tank valve is closed.
  2. Attach the hose regulator to the 20-pound propane tank.
  3. Connect the other end of the hose (with the filter) to the heater's propane connection port.
  4. Slowly open the valve on the 20-pound propane tank.
  5. Check all connections for leaks using soapy water.

4. Operating Instructions

Igniting the Heater:

  1. Ensure the propane supply is connected and the valve is open.
  2. Push and turn the control knob to the "PILOT" position.
  3. While holding the knob in, press the igniter button repeatedly until the pilot flame lights. You may need to hold the knob in for 30-60 seconds to allow gas to reach the pilot.
  4. Once the pilot is lit, continue to hold the control knob in for another 30 seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat up.
  5. Release the control knob. The pilot flame should remain lit.

Adjusting Heat Settings:

After the pilot is lit and stable, you can select your desired heat setting:

  • Turn the control knob to "LO" for low heat (4,000 BTU).
  • Turn the control knob to "HI" for high heat (9,000 BTU).

Shutting Down the Heater:

To turn off the heater, simply turn the control knob to the "OFF" position. Close the valve on the propane tank if using an external tank.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Mr. Heater Portable Buddy. Always ensure the heater is completely cool before performing any maintenance.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the exterior of the heater with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Keep the ceramic burner surface clean and free of debris.
  • Storage: When not in use, disconnect the propane cylinder/tank and store the heater in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Hose and Filter Inspection: If using an external propane tank, regularly inspect the hose and filter for any signs of wear, cracks, or damage. Replace if necessary.

6. Troubleshooting

Heater Not Igniting:

  • Ensure the propane cylinder/tank is properly connected and has fuel.
  • Verify the propane tank valve is fully open.
  • Hold the control knob in the "PILOT" position for a longer duration (up to 60 seconds) to allow gas to prime the system before pressing the igniter.
  • Check if the igniter is sparking. If not, it may need cleaning or replacement.

Propane Tank Freezing/Frosting:

When operating the heater for extended periods in cold temperatures, especially with 1-pound propane cylinders, the cylinder may freeze or frost over. This can reduce gas flow and cause the heater to stop working.

  • This is a normal occurrence due to the rapid vaporization of propane.
  • To mitigate this, consider using a larger 20-pound propane tank with an appropriate hose and filter, as larger tanks are less prone to freezing.
  • Ensure the tank is not directly exposed to extremely cold surfaces.

Heater Shuts Off Unexpectedly:

  • Check if the heater was tipped over, activating the tip-over safety shut-off.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation. The Low Oxygen Safety Shut-Off may have activated if oxygen levels dropped.
  • Verify the propane supply. The tank may be empty or nearly empty.
