Introduction
Thank you for choosing the LIFEGARD Low Iron Ultra Clear 24 Gallon Crystal Aquarium. This aquarium is designed to provide a clear and healthy aquatic environment for your fish and aquatic pets. It features rimless glass, beveled edges, and a complete built-in back filter system for optimal water quality and ease of maintenance. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and care of your new aquarium.
Safety Information
Please read all safety instructions before setting up and operating your aquarium. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury or damage to the product.
- Fragile Material: The aquarium is constructed from glass and is fragile. Handle with extreme care during unpacking and setup to prevent breakage.
- Placement: Always place the aquarium on a sturdy, level surface capable of supporting its full weight when filled with water, substrate, and decorations. Ensure the surface is free from vibrations.
- Electrical Safety: Ensure all electrical components (pump, heater, lighting, etc.) are properly grounded and connected to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet. Never operate electrical equipment with wet hands.
- Water and Electricity: Never immerse electrical cords or plugs in water. Disconnect all electrical equipment from power before performing maintenance or handling the aquarium water.
- Children and Pets: Keep the aquarium and all its components out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidents.
- Leak Testing: Before adding fish or decorations, perform a leak test by filling the aquarium with water in a safe location for at least 24 hours.
Package Contents
Carefully unpack your aquarium and verify that all components are present:
- Low Iron Glass Aquarium
- QuietOne Submersible Pump (240 GPH with flow control)
- Bio Balls
- Carbon Media
- Sponge Filters
- Top Drain
- Bottom Drain or Plug
- Adjustable Return Fitting (Directional Jet Flow)
- Bottom Insulation Pad
Setup Instructions
Follow these steps for proper setup of your LIFEGARD Crystal Aquarium:
- Choose a Location: Select a stable, level surface away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts. Ensure the location can support the weight of the filled aquarium (approximately 240 lbs for 24 gallons of water plus equipment).
- Place Insulation Pad: Position the included bottom insulation pad on your chosen surface. This pad helps to level the aquarium and protect the surface.
- Position Aquarium: Carefully place the aquarium on the insulation pad. Ensure it is centered and level.
- Install Filter Media: The built-in back filter is designed for efficient filtration. Install the provided sponge filters, bio balls, and carbon media into the designated compartments within the back filter section. Refer to the diagram below for typical media placement.

- Install Submersible Pump: Place the QuietOne submersible pump into the designated pump chamber within the back filter. Connect the adjustable return fitting to the pump outlet and position it for optimal water flow into the main display area.
- Add Substrate and Decorations: Rinse any substrate (gravel, sand) thoroughly before adding it to the aquarium. Arrange decorations as desired, ensuring they are stable and do not pose a risk to the glass.
- Fill with Water: Slowly fill the aquarium with dechlorinated water. Fill to the appropriate level, ensuring the pump is fully submerged and the filter compartments are operational.
- Leak Test: After filling, carefully inspect the aquarium for any leaks. Allow it to sit for at least 24 hours to confirm no leaks are present before adding livestock.
- Connect Power: Once leak testing is complete, connect the pump and any other electrical equipment (heater, lighting) to a GFCI-protected power outlet.
Operating Instructions
Your LIFEGARD Crystal Aquarium is designed for both freshwater and saltwater applications. The built-in back filter system provides continuous water circulation and filtration.
- Pump Operation: The QuietOne submersible pump should run continuously to ensure proper filtration and water movement. The flow control allows you to adjust the water output as needed for your specific aquatic setup.
- Directional Jet Flow: Adjust the return fitting to direct water flow, creating optimal circulation and preventing stagnant areas within the aquarium.
- Temperature Control: If keeping tropical fish, install an appropriate aquarium heater (not included) and set it to the desired temperature. Monitor the temperature with an aquarium thermometer.
- Lighting: Provide appropriate lighting for your aquatic inhabitants and plants.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for a healthy and thriving aquatic environment.
- Water Changes: Perform regular partial water changes (e.g., 25% weekly or bi-weekly) to remove nitrates and replenish essential minerals. The bottom drain or plug can simplify this process.
- Filter Media Cleaning/Replacement:
- Sponge Filters: Rinse sponge filters in old aquarium water during water changes to remove trapped debris. Do not rinse under tap water, as chlorine can kill beneficial bacteria. Replace when they begin to break down.
- Carbon Media: Replace carbon media every 2-4 weeks, as it becomes saturated and loses effectiveness.
- Bio Balls: Bio balls provide biological filtration and should generally not be replaced unless heavily fouled. Rinse gently in old aquarium water if necessary.
- Aquarium Cleaning: Regularly clean the interior glass surfaces to remove algae buildup. Use an aquarium-safe scraper or magnet cleaner.
- Pump Maintenance: Periodically clean the submersible pump impeller and housing to ensure optimal performance and prevent blockages. Disconnect power before cleaning.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Water Leakage | Manufacturing defect, shipping damage, improper setup. | Immediately drain water. Inspect for cracks or faulty seals. Contact customer support if a defect is found. |
| Pump is noisy or not flowing water | Impeller obstructed, air in pump, pump not fully submerged, worn impeller. | Disconnect power, remove and clean the impeller. Ensure pump is fully submerged. Check for air bubbles. If noise persists, consider replacing the pump. |
| Cloudy Water | New tank syndrome (bacterial bloom), overfeeding, insufficient filtration, dirty filter media. | Perform partial water changes. Reduce feeding. Clean or replace filter media. Ensure proper cycling for new tanks. |
| Algae Growth | Excess light, excess nutrients (nitrates/phosphates). | Reduce lighting duration. Perform water changes. Clean glass. Consider algae-eating inhabitants. |
