Danfoss RT101 Thermostat User Manual

Model: RT101 (017-500366)

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient installation, operation, and maintenance of the Danfoss RT101 Thermostat. Please read this manual thoroughly before installing or operating the device to ensure proper function and to prevent potential hazards.

The Danfoss RT101 is a robust, industrial-grade thermostat designed for precise temperature control within a range of 25-90°C, featuring an automatic reset function and a Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) switch. It includes a 2000mm capillary tube for remote temperature sensing.

2. Safety Information

Important: Always observe local regulations and safety standards when installing and operating electrical equipment. Failure to do so may result in injury, damage to equipment, or fire.

  • Ensure the power supply is disconnected before performing any installation, wiring, or maintenance.
  • Installation and electrical connections must be performed by qualified personnel only.
  • Verify that the supply voltage matches the thermostat's specifications (230 Volts).
  • Do not expose the thermostat or capillary tube to excessive mechanical stress or sharp bends.
  • Protect the sensor bulb from physical damage.
  • This device is not intended for use in explosive atmospheres.

3. Product Overview

The Danfoss RT101 Thermostat is a reliable electromechanical temperature switch. Its primary function is to maintain a desired temperature by controlling an external heating or cooling system through its SPDT contact configuration.

Danfoss RT101 Thermostat with capillary tube and sensor bulb

Image: Danfoss RT101 Thermostat. The image displays the main thermostat unit, a grey rectangular enclosure with the Danfoss logo and 'MADE IN POLAND' inscription. A white circular gland is visible on the left side, from which a coiled metallic capillary tube extends. The tube terminates in a silver, tapered sensor bulb, designed for immersion or surface contact to measure temperature.

Key features include:

  • Temperature Range: 25-90°C
  • Switch Type: SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw)
  • Reset Type: Automatic Reset
  • Capillary Tube Length: 2000mm
  • Robust Copper construction for the capillary tube and sensor.

4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Unpacking

  • Carefully remove the thermostat from its packaging.
  • Inspect the unit for any signs of damage during transit. Do not install if damaged.
  • Ensure all components are present: thermostat unit, capillary tube with sensor bulb.

4.2 Mounting

  • Select a suitable mounting location that is free from excessive vibration, direct sunlight, and extreme temperatures outside the operating range of the unit itself.
  • Mount the thermostat securely using appropriate fasteners. Ensure the unit is level.
  • Position the capillary tube and sensor bulb in the area where temperature is to be measured. The 2000mm length allows for flexible placement.
  • Avoid sharp bends or kinks in the capillary tube, as this can affect accuracy or damage the tube. The minimum bending radius should be observed.

4.3 Electrical Connections

Warning: Disconnect power before making any electrical connections.

  • The Danfoss RT101 operates at 230 Volts. Confirm your power supply matches this requirement.
  • Open the terminal cover on the thermostat unit.
  • Connect the power supply and controlled load to the appropriate terminals as indicated by the wiring diagram inside the unit cover. The RT101 features an SPDT switch, providing both normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) contacts relative to the common terminal.
  • Ensure all connections are tight and secure.
  • Close the terminal cover securely after wiring.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Setting the Temperature

  • The thermostat features a button control mechanism for setting the desired temperature.
  • Refer to the markings on the thermostat for temperature adjustment. Typically, a dial or button allows you to select a setpoint within the 25-90°C range.
  • Turn the adjustment mechanism to the desired temperature setpoint.
  • The thermostat will activate or deactivate the connected load when the sensed temperature crosses this setpoint, considering the differential (hysteresis).

5.2 Auto Reset Function

The Danfoss RT101 is equipped with an automatic reset function. This means that once the temperature returns to within the acceptable operating range (after exceeding a set limit and triggering the switch), the thermostat will automatically reset its contacts without manual intervention. This is crucial for continuous process control where manual resetting is impractical or undesirable.

6. Maintenance

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the thermostat, capillary tube, and sensor bulb for any signs of physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  • Cleaning: Keep the thermostat housing clean and free from dust and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Sensor Placement: Ensure the sensor bulb remains correctly positioned and has good thermal contact with the medium or surface it is monitoring.
  • Electrical Connections: Annually check electrical connections for tightness.
  • No user-serviceable parts inside. For internal repairs, contact qualified service personnel.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Thermostat not switchingNo power supply; Incorrect wiring; Sensor not detecting temperature change; Setpoint too far from actual temperature.Check power supply; Verify wiring against diagram; Ensure sensor is correctly placed; Adjust setpoint.
Inaccurate temperature readingPoor sensor contact; Damaged capillary tube/sensor; External heat sources affecting thermostat unit.Ensure good thermal contact; Inspect capillary tube for damage; Relocate thermostat unit if necessary.
Frequent switching (short cycling)Setpoint too close to actual temperature; Insufficient differential; Sensor exposed to rapid temperature fluctuations.Adjust setpoint; Consult specifications for differential; Improve sensor placement stability.
