5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

The BT-39K requires two AAA batteries for operation. Ensure the meter is turned OFF before installing or replacing batteries.

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the multimeter.
  2. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw securing the battery cover.
  3. Remove the cover.
  4. Insert two AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+ and -) as indicated inside the compartment. If batteries are new, remove any plastic wrap.
  5. Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw.

5.2 Test Lead Connection

Connect the test leads to the appropriate input jacks for your desired measurement.

  • Always connect the black test lead to the COM (Common) jack.
  • For voltage, resistance, frequency, continuity, and diode measurements, connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
  • For current measurements up to 10A, connect the red test lead to the 10A jack.

6. Operating Instructions

This section details how to perform various measurements with your BT-39K multimeter.

6.1 Power On/Off

Turn the rotary switch to any desired function to power on the meter. Turn it to the "OFF" position to power off the meter.

6.2 Measuring AC/DC Voltage

  1. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the V~ (AC Voltage) or V- (DC Voltage) position. The meter will auto-range.
  3. Connect the test probes in parallel to the circuit or component you wish to measure.
  4. Read the voltage value on the LCD display.

6.3 Measuring AC/DC Current

Caution: Never connect the meter in parallel to a voltage source when measuring current. This can blow the fuse or damage the meter.

  1. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack.
  2. For current up to 400mA, connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack. For current up to 10A, connect the red test lead to the 10A jack.
  3. Turn the rotary switch to the mA~ (AC Current), mA- (DC Current), A~ (AC Current), or A- (DC Current) position as appropriate.
  4. Open the circuit where you want to measure current and connect the meter in series with the circuit.
  5. Read the current value on the LCD display.

6.4 Measuring Resistance

  1. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the Ω (Resistance) position.
  3. Connect the test probes across the component whose resistance you want to measure. Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
  4. Read the resistance value on the LCD display.

6.5 Continuity Test

  1. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the Ω (Resistance) position.
  3. Press the SELECT button repeatedly until the continuity symbol ()))) appears on the display.
  4. Connect the test probes across the circuit or component. If the resistance is less than approximately 50Ω, the buzzer will sound, indicating continuity.

6.6 Diode Test

  1. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the Ω (Resistance) position.
  3. Press the SELECT button repeatedly until the diode symbol (->|) appears on the display.
  4. Connect the red test probe to the anode and the black test probe to the cathode of the diode. The display will show the forward voltage drop. Reverse the probes; the display should show "OL" (Open Line) for a good diode.

6.7 Non-Contact AC Voltage (NCV) Detection

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the NCV position.
  2. Place the NCV detection area (top front of the meter) near the AC voltage source (e.g., a live wire, outlet).
  3. The meter will beep and the NCV indicator light will flash with increasing frequency as it detects stronger AC voltage.

6.8 Frequency / Duty Cycle Measurement

  1. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the Hz/% position.
  3. Connect the test probes in parallel to the circuit or component providing the signal.
  4. Read the frequency (Hz) or duty cycle (%) value on the LCD display. Press the Hz/% button to toggle between frequency and duty cycle.

6.9 Data Hold Function (HOLD)

Press the HOLD button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release the hold and resume live readings.

6.10 Relative Measurement Function (REL)

The REL function allows you to set the current reading as a reference value and display subsequent measurements as a deviation from this reference. Press the REL button to activate. Press again to exit.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

Wipe the meter with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the display clean and dry.

7.2 Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries as described in the "Battery Installation" section (5.1). Always use two new AAA batteries.

7.3 Fuse Replacement

If the current measurement functions stop working, the fuse may be blown. The meter has two fuses located in the battery compartment. Ensure the meter is OFF and test leads are disconnected before attempting fuse replacement.

  • Open the battery compartment cover.
  • Carefully remove the old fuse(s).
  • Replace with fuses of the same type and rating:
    • F1: Fused 10A MAX / 10Sec MAX
    • F2: Fused 500mA MAX / 600V MAX
  • Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw.

7.4 Storage

If the meter is not used for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage. Store the meter in its carrying case in a cool, dry place.

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Meter does not power on.Dead or incorrectly installed batteries.Check battery polarity; replace batteries.
No reading or "OL" displayed (except for diode reverse bias).Open circuit; incorrect range; test leads not properly connected.Ensure circuit is complete; verify test lead connection; select appropriate function.
Inaccurate readings.Low battery; external interference; incorrect function selected.Replace batteries; move away from strong electromagnetic fields; ensure correct function.
Current measurement not working.Blown fuse.Replace the appropriate fuse (10A or 500mA).
Display shows a small DC voltage when leads are open.Normal behavior due to high input impedance picking up ambient electrical noise. This is typically not an issue. The reading should go to zero when leads are shorted or connected to a circuit.
