Compatibility

The AMD Wraith Prism LED RGB Cooler Fan supports the following motherboard sockets:

  • AM2
  • AM3
  • AM3+
  • AM4

It is compatible with desktop systems.

Setup and Installation

Before beginning installation, ensure your system is powered off and unplugged. Refer to your motherboard manual for specific CPU cooler mounting instructions if necessary.

  1. Prepare the Motherboard: Ensure the CPU is correctly seated in its socket. The Wraith Prism cooler comes with pre-applied thermal paste, so no additional paste is typically needed unless you choose to replace it.
  2. Position the Cooler: Align the cooler's retention clips with the mounting brackets on your motherboard. The cooler can be oriented to allow the AMD logo to be readable from the top-left, or as preferred.
  3. Secure the Cooler: Attach one side of the cooler's retention clip to the motherboard bracket. Apply gentle, even pressure to the opposite side of the cooler while pushing down the second retention clip until it locks into place. Ensure the cooler is firmly seated and does not wobble.
  4. Connect the Fan Power: Connect the 4-pin fan power cable from the cooler to the CPU_FAN header on your motherboard.
  5. Adjust Fan Speed Switch: Locate the H/L (High/Low) fan speed switch on the side of the cooler. Set it to 'H' for higher maximum RPMs and increased cooling performance, or 'L' for quieter operation. This should be done before installing other components that might obstruct access.
  6. Connect RGB Cables:
    • For motherboard RGB control: Connect the 4-pin RGB cable to a compatible 4-pin 12V RGB header on your motherboard.
    • For software RGB control (via AMD/Cooler Master software): Connect the USB 2.0 header cable to an available USB 2.0 header on your motherboard. Do not connect both the 4-pin RGB and USB 2.0 cables simultaneously for RGB control, as this can cause conflicts. Choose one method.

Operation

Once installed and connected, the AMD Wraith Prism cooler will automatically begin operating when your system powers on. The fan speed will adjust based on CPU temperature, managed by your motherboard's fan control settings or the selected fan profile (H/L switch).

RGB Lighting Control

The Wraith Prism features customizable RGB lighting. You have two primary options for controlling the lighting:

  • Motherboard Software: If you connected the 4-pin RGB cable to your motherboard, you can use your motherboard's proprietary RGB software (e.g., ASUS Aura Sync, MSI Mystic Light, Gigabyte RGB Fusion) to synchronize and control the cooler's lighting with other system components.
  • AMD/Cooler Master Software: If you connected the USB 2.0 header cable, you can download and install the AMD Wraith Prism software (developed by Cooler Master) from the official AMD website. This software provides granular control over the cooler's RGB effects, including the fan, outer ring, and AMD logo. Note that using this software typically means the motherboard's RGB control will be overridden or disabled for the cooler.

Important: Do not connect both the 4-pin RGB cable and the USB 2.0 header cable for RGB control simultaneously. Choose one method to avoid potential conflicts or damage.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure optimal performance and longevity of your cooler.

  • Dust Removal: Periodically clean dust from the fan blades and heatsink fins using compressed air or a soft brush. Ensure the system is powered off before cleaning.
  • Thermal Paste: The pre-applied thermal paste is designed for long-term use. If you need to remove and re-install the cooler, it is recommended to clean off the old thermal paste from both the CPU and cooler base and apply new thermal paste.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
High CPU Temperatures Improper cooler installation, insufficient thermal paste, dust buildup, fan speed set too low.
  • Re-seat the cooler to ensure proper contact with the CPU.
  • Check if thermal paste is adequately applied (re-apply if necessary).
  • Clean dust from the heatsink and fan.
  • Ensure the H/L switch is set to 'H' for higher performance.
  • Verify fan speed settings in BIOS/UEFI or motherboard software.
Fan Not Spinning Fan power cable disconnected, faulty fan.
  • Check the 4-pin fan power cable connection to the CPU_FAN header.
  • Test the fan on another fan header if available.
RGB Lighting Not Working Incorrect RGB cable connection, software conflict, incompatible motherboard header.
  • Ensure only ONE RGB control cable (4-pin RGB or USB 2.0) is connected.
  • Verify the 4-pin RGB cable is connected to a 12V RGB header (not 5V ARGB).
  • Install or update the appropriate RGB control software (motherboard or AMD/Cooler Master).
  • Check for loose connections.
Excessive Noise Fan speed too high, dust buildup, loose fan.
  • Adjust fan speed settings in BIOS/UEFI or software.
  • Clean dust from the fan and heatsink.
  • Ensure the fan is securely mounted.
  • Set the H/L switch to 'L' for quieter operation if performance allows.
