Product Overview and Features

The SHARPAL 216N is a multi-purpose sharpening tool engineered for optimal performance. Key features include:

  • Fast, Durable Sharpening: Industrial monocrystalline diamonds are electroplated onto a stainless steel base, offering up to 5 times faster sharpening than traditional oil or water stones with extended service life.
  • Multifunctional Use: Capable of sharpening and honing all hard materials, including knives, axes, hatchets, machetes, lawn mower blades, spades, drills, chisels, shears, carbide, high-speed steel, titanium, ceramics, and most super hard materials. Designed for dry sharpening, eliminating the need for messy oil or water.
  • Dual Grit Design: Features an Extra Coarse 220 grit (60 micron) side for repairing dull or damaged edges and establishing new edges, and a Fine 600 grit (25 micron) side for achieving a sharp edge and honing.

Operating Instructions

Always exercise caution when sharpening. Wear appropriate hand protection to prevent injury.

General Sharpening Principles:

  • Identify the existing angle of your blade. Maintain this angle throughout the sharpening process.
  • Begin with the Extra Coarse 220 grit side for very dull, damaged, or re-profiling tasks.
  • Transition to the Fine 600 grit side for refining the edge and achieving a keen finish.
  • Use light, consistent pressure. Excessive pressure can damage the blade or the sharpener.
  • Sharpen in one direction, typically pulling the blade towards you or pushing it away, depending on the tool and your comfort, ensuring the entire edge makes contact.

Specific Applications:

Knives (Straight Edge):

  1. Hold the knife firmly with the blade facing away from you.
  2. Place the sharpener against the blade at the desired angle.
  3. Draw the sharpener across the blade from heel to tip, maintaining a consistent angle. Repeat several times.
  4. Flip the knife and repeat on the other side of the blade.
  5. Switch to the Fine 600 grit side and repeat the process for a polished edge.

Axes, Hatchets, Machetes:

  1. Secure the tool (e.g., in a vise or against a stable surface) with the blade edge facing upwards and away from you.
  2. Using the Extra Coarse 220 grit, apply the sharpener to the bevel of the blade.
  3. Use circular or sweeping motions along the entire edge, maintaining the original bevel angle.
  4. Repeat on the other side of the blade.
  5. Finish with the Fine 600 grit side for a refined, sharp edge.

Garden Tools (Shears, Pruners, Lawn Mower Blades):

  1. Disassemble or secure the tool as needed to safely access the blade.
  2. Identify the existing bevel angle.
  3. Use the Extra Coarse 220 grit to remove nicks and restore the primary edge.
  4. Follow with the Fine 600 grit to smooth and sharpen the edge.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your SHARPAL 216N sharpening stone:

  • After each use, wipe the diamond surfaces with a damp cloth to remove metal particles and debris.
  • Store the sharpener in its portable storage pouch in a dry place to prevent rust and damage.
  • Avoid dropping the sharpener, as this can damage the diamond surface or the handle.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with sharpening, consider the following:

  • Blade not sharpening: Ensure you are maintaining a consistent angle throughout the stroke. The angle should match the original bevel of the blade.
  • Scratches on blade: This may indicate excessive pressure or an incorrect angle. Use lighter pressure and verify your angle. Also, ensure you are progressing from coarser to finer grits appropriately.
  • Sharpener feels clogged: Clean the diamond surface thoroughly with a damp cloth or a soft brush to remove embedded metal particles.
