1. Preparation
- Ensure the safe door is open and unlocked before beginning installation.
- Gather necessary tools, which typically include screwdrivers, a hacksaw (if modifying a spindle), and measuring tools.
- Review the technical drawing for precise dimensions and mounting hole patterns.

3. Installing the Lock Body

- Connect the keypad cable to the lock body.

4. Installing the Keypad and Battery
- Feed the keypad cable through the safe door's spindle hole.
- Attach the keypad to the exterior of the safe door.
- Insert the 9V Lithium Ion battery into the designated compartment within the keypad or lock body, as per the specific model's design. Ensure correct polarity.
Operating Instructions
1. Initial Code Setup
Upon first power-up, the lock will typically have a default factory code. It is critical to change this code immediately for security purposes. Refer to the specific programming instructions provided with your lock for "Star mode" or "Basic mode" programming sequences.
- Master Code: This code has full control over the lock, including changing user codes and other settings.
- User Code(s): These codes can only open and close the lock. The Spartan Direct Drive supports two user codes.
Important: Always test your new code with the safe door open before closing it.
2. Locking the Safe
To lock the safe, ensure the door is closed. The Spartan Direct Drive features a mechanical knob/bezel for direct control:
- Close the safe door.
- Turn the keypad bezel counter-clockwise to extend the bolt and lock the safe.
- The lock will blink once and beep twice to confirm it is locked.

Image 6: The keypad showing visual indicators for locked (red dot) and unlocked (open padlock icon) states, with arrows indicating bezel rotation for locking and unlocking.
3. Unlocking the Safe
To unlock the safe:
- Enter your valid user code or master code on the keypad.
- After successful code entry, the lock will indicate an unlocked state (e.g., a green light or specific beep pattern).
- Turn the keypad bezel clockwise to retract the bolt and open the safe door.
The direct drive mechanism allows the bolt to remain retracted even if the door is closed, providing convenience for frequent access. To re-lock, simply turn the bezel counter-clockwise.
4. SmartThings Integration (Optional)
The Spartan Direct Drive lock is compatible with SmartThings via Z-Wave connectivity for remote monitoring and control. Refer to your SmartThings hub's documentation for pairing instructions. This feature allows for integration into a smart home system for enhanced security management.
Maintenance
1. Battery Replacement
The lock operates on one 9V Lithium Ion battery. The keypad will provide low battery warnings (e.g., specific light flashes or beep patterns) when the battery needs replacement. It is recommended to replace the battery annually or at the first sign of a low battery warning.
- To replace the battery, locate the battery compartment, typically on the underside or rear of the keypad.
- Remove the old battery and insert a new 9V Lithium Ion battery, ensuring correct polarity.
- Dispose of old batteries responsibly.
Note: Always replace the battery with the safe door open to avoid being locked out if an issue occurs during replacement.
2. Cleaning
Clean the keypad surface with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or excessive moisture, as these can damage the electronic components or finish.
3. General Care
Avoid applying excessive force to the keypad or bezel. The direct drive mechanism is designed for durability, but proper handling ensures longevity.
