Philips Saeco Xelsis Super Automatic Espresso Machine
Model: SM7684/04
Introduction
The Philips Saeco Xelsis Super Automatic Espresso Machine is designed to provide a wide array of coffee beverages with ease and precision. From classic espresso to specialty milk-based drinks, this machine offers extensive customization options to suit individual preferences. Its intuitive touchscreen interface and advanced features ensure a consistent and enjoyable coffee experience.
Setup
Before first use, ensure all packaging materials are removed. Place the machine on a stable, level surface. It is recommended to perform an initial rinse cycle as per the on-screen instructions.
Water Filter Installation
The AquaClean water filter helps maintain water quality and reduces the need for frequent descaling. Follow the on-screen prompts for filter activation and installation. Ensure the water tank is filled with fresh water and a container is placed under the dispensing spout to collect water during the activation process. A container of at least 16 oz is recommended to prevent overflow.

Grind Settings Adjustment
The machine features 12 grind settings, with level 1 being the finest and level 12 the coarsest. The default setting is level 7. To adjust the grind setting, locate the dial inside the bean hopper. Adjustments should only be made when the grinder is operating. For espresso, a finer grind (levels 1-3) is typically preferred. Note that it may take 5-7 brewing cycles for the machine to fully adapt to a new grind setting.

Initial Brewing and Taste Adjustment
During the first few uses, especially after grind setting adjustments, the coffee may taste weak or have an unusual flavor. This is normal as the machine calibrates and new components are flushed. Continue brewing several cups until the desired taste is achieved. For milk-based drinks, it is advisable to run a few cycles with water through the milk system to eliminate any initial plastic taste.
Operating Instructions
The Xelsis machine offers a variety of coffee options and customization through its touchscreen interface.
Selecting a Beverage
Swipe the touchscreen to browse and select from 15 different coffee varieties, including Espresso, Cappuccino, Latte Macchiato, and Americano.

LatteDuo Milk System
The LatteDuo Milk System allows for the preparation of single or double servings of milk-based coffee recipes, such as Cappuccino or Latte Macchiato, with a single touch. The system ensures dense and consistent milk foam.

Temperature Settings
The machine offers adjustable temperature settings for beverages. Experiment with these settings to find your preferred hotness. The Double Thermo Blocks ensure accurate temperature control for both brewing and steaming.
Cup Warmer and Spout Light
The top surface of the machine can become warm from residual heat during operation, which can help pre-warm cups. However, it is not a dedicated heated cup warmer. The machine is equipped with an LED light in the spout area, though its activation may not be directly controllable via the menu on all models.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your espresso machine.
Milk System Cleaning
The LatteDuo milk system features an easy steam cleaning function. After each use, place the milk tube into the designated port in the drip tray and activate the steam clean cycle. This takes approximately 15 seconds. For thorough cleaning, disassemble the milk spout system weekly and rinse all parts under running water. The components are designed for easy assembly and disassembly.
AquaClean Filter Benefits
By frequently changing the AquaClean filter, you can enjoy clear and purified water, significantly reducing the need for descaling the machine for up to 5000 cups, depending on water hardness and usage.

General Cleaning
- Water Tank: Refill the water tank as needed.
- Spent Coffee Grounds Container: Empty the spent coffee grounds container regularly.
- Drip Tray: Empty and clean the drip tray frequently. Note that the drip tray is relatively shallow and may require daily emptying due to internal rinse cycles.
- Brew Unit: Once a week, remove the brew unit, rinse it thoroughly under running water, and allow it to air dry completely before reinserting. Wipe down the brew unit area with a damp cloth.
- Monthly Cleaning: Refer to the full user manual for instructions on monthly milk washing and brew group tablet cleaning.
Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter.
Weak or Watery Coffee
If your coffee is weak or watery, especially after adjusting grind settings, allow the machine to complete several brewing cycles (5-7 cups) to adapt to the new setting. Ensure the grind setting is appropriate for your desired beverage (finer for espresso). Also, check that the coffee beans are fresh and not oily, as oily beans can clog the grinder.
Plastic Taste in Beverages
An initial plastic taste, particularly in milk or hot water, can occur. To resolve this, run several cycles of hot water through the milk carafe and tube, using only plain water. This flushes out any residual manufacturing tastes.
Ground Coffee Not Brewing
If using pre-ground coffee, ensure the correct amount is added and the 'ground coffee' option is selected. If the machine cancels the process, try repeating the steps. Ensure the ground coffee chute is not blocked.
Water Level Issues
The machine may not always alert you to low water levels before starting a brew cycle, potentially interrupting it. It is recommended to ensure the water tank is sufficiently filled before initiating a drink preparation, especially for larger volumes.
