Setup

Mounting the Vise

Proper mounting is crucial for the stability and safe operation of your bench vise. Ensure your workbench is sturdy and capable of supporting the vise's weight and the forces applied during use.

  1. Select Location: Choose a location on your workbench that provides ample clearance for operation and is structurally sound.
  2. Mark Mounting Holes: Position the vise on the workbench and mark the locations for the mounting bolts through the holes in the swivel base.
  3. Drill Holes: Drill appropriate-sized holes through the workbench for your mounting hardware. Use bolts, washers, and nuts suitable for the vise's weight and intended use.
  4. Secure Vise: Place the vise over the drilled holes. Insert bolts with washers from the top, and secure with washers and nuts from underneath. Tighten all fasteners securely.
  5. Check Stability: After mounting, ensure the vise is firmly attached and does not wobble or shift during operation.

Operating Instructions

Clamping a Workpiece

  1. Open Jaws: Rotate the vise handle counter-clockwise to open the jaws to a width slightly larger than your workpiece.
  2. Position Workpiece: Place the workpiece securely between the jaws. For delicate materials, use jaw pads to prevent damage.
  3. Close Jaws: Rotate the handle clockwise to close the jaws until the workpiece is firmly held. Apply sufficient force to prevent movement, but avoid over-tightening, which can damage the workpiece or vise.

Using the Swivel Base

  1. Loosen Lockdowns: Loosen the double lockdowns located on the swivel base.
  2. Rotate Vise: Rotate the vise body to the desired angle (up to 360 degrees).
  3. Tighten Lockdowns: Once the desired position is achieved, securely tighten both lockdowns to prevent rotation during use.

Pipe Jaw Capacity

The vise includes integrated pipe jaws for securely holding round stock. The 10-inch model has a pipe jaw capacity of 1/2 inch to 5 inches.

Utilizing the Anvil

The large, flat surface at the rear of the stationary jaw serves as an anvil. It can be used for light hammering, shaping, or bending operations. Always ensure the workpiece is stable and use appropriate safety gear.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your Wilton Mechanics Pro Bench Vise.

  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a light coat of grease or oil to the main screw and slide bar to ensure smooth operation. The enclosed spindle design helps retain lubrication.
  • Cleaning: Keep the vise clean from debris, metal shavings, and dust. Use a brush or compressed air to clear out any accumulation, especially around the jaws and screw mechanism.
  • Jaw Inspection: Inspect the steel jaw inserts for wear or damage. The inserts are replaceable; contact Wilton support for replacement parts if needed.
  • Fastener Check: Periodically check all mounting bolts and swivel base lockdowns to ensure they remain tight.

Troubleshooting

  • Jaws Sticking/Hard to Turn: This often indicates a lack of lubrication or accumulation of debris. Clean the screw and slide bar, then apply appropriate lubricant.
  • Vise Wobbles: Check all mounting bolts and swivel base lockdowns. Tighten any loose fasteners. Ensure the workbench itself is stable.
  • Workpiece Slipping: Ensure the jaws are clean and free of oil or grease. If the jaw inserts are worn smooth, they may need replacement.
