5. Operating Instructions
The BENNING IT 105 offers various measurement functions. Always select the correct function for the test required.
5.1. Low-Resistance Measurement (Continuity Test)
This function measures the low-resistance of protective earth conductors and equipotential bonding conductors with a test current of 200 mA.
- Turn the rotary switch to the continuity test symbol (e.g., Ω).
- Connect the test leads to the circuit under test.
- Press the TEST button to initiate the measurement.
- Read the resistance value on the display.
5.2. Insulation Resistance Measurement
Measures insulation resistance with selectable test voltages of 250 V, 500 V, and 1000 V.
- Turn the rotary switch to the Riso position.
- Use the function buttons (F1-F4) to select the desired test voltage (250V, 500V, or 1000V).
- Connect the test leads to the conductors between which insulation resistance is to be measured.
- Press the TEST button. The measurement will be displayed.
5.3. Loop Impedance Measurement (Zs/Zi)
This function measures loop impedance (L-PE) without tripping RCDs (NO-TRIP) and simultaneously displays the prospective fault current (PFC). It also measures line impedance (L-N/L) with a high test current (HIGH CURRENT) and displays the prospective short-circuit current (PSC).

Figure 3: The BENNING IT 105 Installation Tester actively measuring within an electrical distribution panel. A user is holding a test probe connected to the device, demonstrating a typical application for electrical safety testing.
- Turn the rotary switch to the Zs/Zi position.
- Select either NO-TRIP (for RCD protected circuits) or HIGH CURRENT (for non-RCD protected circuits) using the function buttons.
- Connect the test leads to the appropriate points in the circuit (e.g., L-PE for loop impedance, L-N or L-L for line impedance).
- Press the TEST button. The impedance and corresponding fault/short-circuit current will be displayed.

Figure 4: The BENNING IT 105 Installation Tester connected to a standard wall socket using its test leads. This setup is common for performing various electrical tests directly at an outlet, such as loop impedance or RCD tests.
5.4. RCD Testing
Tests RCDs (Residual Current Devices), including standard and delayed (S) types, with sinusoidal (AC) and pulsating (A) test currents.
- Turn the rotary switch to the RCD position.
- Use the function buttons to select the RCD type (AC or A), nominal tripping current (e.g., 30mA, 100mA), and test current multiplier (x1/2, x1, x5).
- Connect the test leads to the circuit protected by the RCD.
- Press the TEST button. The device will perform the test and display the tripping time and current.
6. Maintenance
6.1. Cleaning
Clean the device regularly with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the device is powered off and disconnected from all circuits before cleaning.
6.2. Battery Replacement
Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Refer to section 4.1 for battery installation instructions. Dispose of used batteries according to local regulations.
6.3. Storage
When not in use, store the BENNING IT 105 in its hard case in a dry, dust-free environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
6.4. Calibration
To ensure continued accuracy and compliance with standards, regular calibration by an authorized service center is recommended. Refer to the manufacturer's guidelines for recommended calibration intervals.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not power on. | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. | Check battery polarity; replace batteries. |
| No reading or "OL" (Overload) displayed. | Incorrect function selected, open circuit, or measurement range exceeded. | Verify function selection; check test lead connections; ensure circuit is complete. |
| Inaccurate readings. | Dirty test leads/terminals, uncalibrated device, or external interference. | Clean leads/terminals; consider professional calibration; re-test in a different environment. |
| RCD test trips the RCD prematurely or not at all. | Incorrect RCD type/current selected, or faulty RCD. | Verify RCD settings on the tester; consult an electrician if RCD is suspected faulty. |
