3.3 Connecting via XLR
For connection to a mixer, audio interface, or PA system:
- Ensure the microphone's ON/OFF switch is in the OFF position.
- Connect the supplied XLR cable to the XLR output at the bottom of the Q2U microphone.
- Connect the other end of the XLR cable to an available XLR input on your mixer or audio interface.
- Switch the microphone's ON/OFF switch to the ON position.
3.4 Headphone Monitoring
The Q2U features a 3.5mm stereo headphone output for zero-latency monitoring of your microphone signal and computer audio (when connected via USB).
- Connect your headphones to the 3.5mm jack at the bottom of the microphone.
- Adjust the headphone volume using the Up/Down buttons located near the headphone jack.
4. Operating the Microphone
4.1 Power On/Off
Use the ON/OFF slide switch located on the microphone body to power the unit. Ensure it is in the ON position for operation.
4.2 Polar Pattern
The Q2U utilizes a cardioid polar pattern. This means it is most sensitive to sounds coming from directly in front of the microphone and rejects sounds from the sides and rear. For optimal performance, position the microphone directly towards the sound source (e.g., your mouth when speaking or singing).
4.3 Applications
The Q2U is suitable for various applications:
- Podcasting & Broadcasting: Ideal for capturing clear vocals for interviews, solo podcasts, and live streams.
- Music Recording: Can be used for miking vocals, instruments, and guitar amplifiers in a home studio environment.
- Live Performance: Its dynamic capsule and XLR output make it suitable for use with live sound systems.
- Online Communication: Excellent for video conferencing, gaming, and online calls, providing superior audio quality compared to built-in computer microphones.

5. Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Samson Q2U microphone:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the microphone body. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. The included windscreen can be gently hand-washed with mild soap and water, then air-dried completely before reattaching.
- Storage: When not in use, store the microphone in a dry, dust-free environment.
- Handling: Avoid dropping the microphone or subjecting it to strong impacts, as this can damage the internal components.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Samson Q2U microphone, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- No Sound Output (USB Connection):
- Ensure the microphone's ON/OFF switch is in the ON position.
- Verify the USB cable is securely connected to both the microphone and your computer/device.
- Check your computer's sound settings (System Preferences on Mac, Sound Control Panel on Windows) to ensure the Q2U is selected as the default input and output device.
- Confirm that your recording software or communication application is configured to use the Q2U as its audio input.
- If experiencing poor sound quality via USB on certain computers, consider connecting the microphone to a mobile device (e.g., iPhone via adapter) and routing the audio from the mobile device to your computer, as some users have reported this workaround to improve quality in specific scenarios.
- No Sound Output (XLR Connection):
- Ensure the microphone's ON/OFF switch is in the ON position.
- Verify the XLR cable is securely connected to both the microphone and your mixer/interface.
- Check the input gain levels on your mixer or audio interface.
- Ensure phantom power is NOT enabled on the XLR input, as the Q2U is a dynamic microphone and does not require it.
- Distorted Sound:
- Reduce the input gain on your computer, mixer, or audio interface.
- Ensure you are not speaking or singing too closely to the microphone, which can cause clipping.
- Check for any software-based audio processing that might be causing distortion.
- Excessive Background Noise:
- Ensure the microphone is positioned correctly, utilizing its cardioid pattern to reject off-axis sounds.
- Minimize ambient noise in your recording environment.
- Consider using software noise reduction tools if necessary.
