Included Components
Your Sky-Watcher EQM-35 package includes the following items:
- Sky-Watcher EQM-35 EQ GoTo Mount Head
- 2 x 7.5-Pound Counterweights
- Counterweight Shaft
- SynScan Hand Controller with Coiled Cable
- 2 x Motor Assemblies with Control Box and Cables
- Stainless Steel Tripod with Accessory Tray
Setup
1. Initial Assembly
- Extend the tripod legs and secure them. Attach the accessory tray.
- Mount the EQM-35 mount head onto the tripod using the 3/8" tripod screw.
- Insert the AA battery packs into the designated compartment or connect an external 12V DC power source.
- Attach the counterweight shaft and thread the counterweights onto it.
2. Mounting and Balancing
Proper balancing is crucial for smooth tracking and motor longevity.
- Attach your telescope or camera setup to the mount's dovetail saddle.
- Adjust the position of the counterweights along the shaft until the mount is balanced in Right Ascension (RA).
- Adjust the position of your optical tube in the dovetail saddle until the mount is balanced in Declination (DEC).

3. Polar Alignment
Accurate polar alignment is critical for precise tracking, especially for astrophotography.
- Use a reliable source (e.g., Apple Maps, Google Maps) to determine your current latitude.
- Adjust the mount's altitude setting to match your latitude using the markings on the side of the mount.
- Rotate the entire tripod assembly until the mount is roughly aligned with true North (or South, depending on your hemisphere).
- Utilize the built-in illuminated polar finderscope to precisely align the mount with Polaris (Northern Hemisphere) or Sigma Octantis (Southern Hemisphere). The SynScan Pro app can assist with this process by showing Polaris's current position in the reticle.
- Once aligned, tighten all clutches and adjustment knobs.

Operating the Mount
1. SynScan Hand Controller & GoTo Function
The SynScan hand controller provides a user-friendly interface to access the mount's GoTo capabilities. It features a database of over 42,000 celestial objects.
- Perform a 1, 2, or 3-star alignment using the hand controller or the SynScan Pro app to calibrate the mount's position.
- Select an object from the database, and the mount will automatically slew to its position and begin tracking.
2. Computer Control
For advanced control, the EQM-35 can be connected to a computer via a USB cable (sold separately). This enables control through popular astronomy software such as The SkyX, Stellarium, and Starry Night.
3. Tracking Modes
The mount supports various tracking rates to compensate for Earth's rotation:
- Sidereal Rate: For tracking stars and deep-sky objects.
- Lunar Rate: For tracking the Moon.
- Solar Rate: For tracking the Sun (with appropriate solar filters).
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your EQM-35 mount.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the exterior surfaces. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the mount in a dry, dust-free environment when not in use. Disassemble and pack components in their original packaging or a padded case for protection.
- Battery Care: If using AA batteries, remove them during extended periods of storage to prevent leakage.
- Mechanical Inspection: Periodically check all screws and fasteners to ensure they are secure. Do not overtighten.
Troubleshooting
Here are some common issues and potential solutions:
- Poor Tracking/Elongated Stars: This is often due to inaccurate polar alignment. Re-check your polar alignment carefully. Ensure the mount is properly balanced.
- GoTo Inaccuracy: Verify that your initial star alignment procedure was performed correctly. Ensure accurate time, date, and location settings in the SynScan controller or app.
- Mount Not Responding: Check power connections and battery levels. Ensure all cables are securely connected. If using the hand controller, verify it is properly connected.
- Loose Polar Scope Cap: The polar scope cap may occasionally fall off. Ensure it is securely reattached or consider a small piece of tape for added security if needed.
