2. Safety Information

Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, hearing protection, and heavy-duty gloves when operating the wood chipper. Ensure the unit is on a stable, level surface. Never place hands or feet inside the hopper or discharge chute while the machine is running. The internal safety mechanism prevents the chipper from operating if the hopper is not securely closed and locked. Always disconnect power before performing any maintenance or clearing jams.

5. Operating Instructions

  1. Preparation: Place the chipper on a firm, level surface. Ensure the collection bag is properly attached or a suitable container is positioned to catch the shredded material. Verify that the hopper locking knob is fully tightened.
  2. Power On: Connect the power cord to a grounded electrical outlet. Flip the ON/OFF switch to the 'ON' position.
  3. Feeding Material: Carefully feed branches, twigs, and foliage into the hopper. The chipper can handle branches up to 1.5 inches in diameter. For optimal performance and to prevent jamming, feed material slowly and steadily.
  4. Using the Push Stick: Always use the provided push stick to guide material into the blades. Never use your hands or feet to push material into the hopper.
  5. Monitoring: Observe the shredded material being discharged. If the unit bogs down or jams, immediately turn off the power.
  6. Power Off: When finished, turn the ON/OFF switch to the 'OFF' position and disconnect the power cord from the outlet.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your WEN 41121 wood chipper.

  1. Cleaning: After each use, disconnect the power. Loosen the hopper locking knob and open the hopper to access the blade area. Carefully remove any accumulated debris, wood chips, or leaves using a brush or a non-metallic tool. Ensure the blades and surrounding areas are clear.
  2. Blade Inspection: Periodically inspect the two internal 7-inch blades for sharpness and damage. Dull or damaged blades can reduce efficiency and cause jams.
  3. Blade Sharpening/Replacement: If blades become dull, they can be sharpened or replaced. Refer to the detailed instructions in the official WEN manual for proper blade removal and installation procedures. Always wear heavy-duty gloves when handling blades.
  4. Storage: Store the unit in a dry, protected area when not in use.

7. Troubleshooting

Unit Does Not Start:

  • Ensure the power cord is securely plugged into a grounded outlet and the unit.
  • Verify the ON/OFF switch is in the 'ON' position.
  • Check that the hopper locking knob is fully tightened. The unit has an internal safety mechanism that prevents operation if the hopper is not securely locked.
  • Press the reset button on the back of the unit if the circuit breaker has tripped.

Unit Jams or Bogs Down:

  • Immediately turn off the unit and disconnect power.
  • Open the hopper and carefully remove any jammed material. Use a non-metallic tool or the push stick, never your hands.
  • Ensure you are not feeding material larger than 1.5 inches in diameter.
  • Feed material slowly and steadily to avoid overloading the motor.
  • Inspect blades for dullness or damage; dull blades can cause material to get stuck.

Poor Shredding Performance:

  • Check the sharpness of the blades. Sharpen or replace them if they are dull.
  • Ensure material is dry. Green or wet material can be difficult to shred and may clog the unit.
