4. Setup

4.1 Mounting the Lens

  1. Align the red dot on the lens barrel with the red dot on your camera's lens mount.
  2. Rotate the lens clockwise until it clicks into place, indicating it is securely mounted.
  3. To remove the lens, press the lens release button on your camera and rotate the lens counter-clockwise.

4.2 Camera Settings for Manual Lens

Since this is a manual lens, your camera may require specific settings to operate correctly. Most mirrorless cameras have an option to 'Release shutter without lens' or similar. This setting must be enabled for the camera to fire without detecting an electronic connection to the lens.

For Fujifilm cameras, navigate to the 'SHOOTING MENU' and enable 'SHOOT WITHOUT LENS'.

5. Operating the Lens

5.1 Manual Focus

The 7artisans 35mm F1.2 is a manual focus lens. To achieve sharp focus:

  1. Look through your camera's viewfinder or LCD screen.
  2. Rotate the focusing ring on the lens until your subject appears sharp.
  3. Utilize your camera's focus peaking or magnification assist features for more precise focusing.

5.2 Aperture Control

The aperture is controlled by rotating the aperture ring on the lens barrel. The aperture range is from F1.2 (widest) to F16 (narrowest). A wider aperture (smaller f-number) allows more light into the camera and creates a shallower depth of field, ideal for portraits. A narrower aperture (larger f-number) allows less light and creates a greater depth of field, suitable for landscapes.

5.3 Depth of Field Scale

The lens features a depth of field scale, which helps estimate the range of acceptable sharpness at different apertures and focus distances. This can be useful for zone focusing.

6. Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance will prolong the life and performance of your lens.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a lens brush to remove dust from the lens surfaces. For smudges or fingerprints, use a specialized lens cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the lens with both front and rear caps attached in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Consider using a desiccant packet in your camera bag to absorb moisture.
  • Handling: Avoid touching the glass elements directly. Always hold the lens by its barrel.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your 7artisans 35mm F1.2 lens, consider the following common solutions:

  • Camera not firing: Ensure the 'Release shutter without lens' (or similar) option is enabled in your camera's menu.
  • Images are blurry: Verify that the lens is correctly focused. Manual focus requires precise adjustment. Use your camera's focus assist features.
  • Images are too dark/bright: Adjust your camera's exposure settings (ISO, shutter speed) to compensate for the manual aperture.
  • Lens not mounting securely: Check for any obstructions on the lens mount or camera body. Ensure proper alignment before rotating to lock.
