Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for accurate readings and reliable operation. If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified automotive technician.

1. Gauge Mounting

The MSD 4650 gauge features a slim-style mounting design, requiring minimal dash space. It uses a spin lock ring for secure installation.

  • Identify a suitable location on your dashboard or gauge pod for the 2-1/16" (52mm) gauge.
  • Drill a mounting hole with a diameter of 2.062" (52mm). Refer to the dimension diagram for precise measurements.
  • Insert the gauge into the drilled hole from the front.
  • Thread the spin lock ring onto the back of the gauge case until it is snug and secure.

2. O2 Sensor Installation

Install the Bosch LSU 4.9 wideband O2 sensor into an appropriate bung in your exhaust system. Ensure the bung is located where it can accurately read exhaust gases and is not susceptible to water contamination.

  • Ensure the engine and exhaust system are cool before handling the O2 sensor.
  • Apply anti-seize compound to the O2 sensor threads.
  • Thread the O2 sensor into the exhaust bung and tighten to the manufacturer's specifications.

3. Wiring Connections

Connect the wiring harnesses as follows. Ensure all connections are secure and protected from heat and abrasion.

  • Connect the O2 sensor harness to the Bosch LSU 4.9 sensor.
  • Connect the main gauge harness to the back of the MSD 4650 gauge.
  • Route the power and ground wires to appropriate vehicle power sources. Typically, a switched 12V power source and a solid chassis ground are required.
  • Ensure all connectors are fully seated and locked.

Operating Instructions

Once installed and powered, the MSD 4650 gauge will display the current air/fuel ratio. Allow the O2 sensor to warm up for a few moments after initial power-up before taking readings.

Reading the Gauge

The gauge features a 270° sweep pointer, making it easy to read at a glance. The scale typically ranges from rich (lower numbers) to lean (higher numbers) air/fuel ratios.

Peak Recall Function

The MSD 4650 includes a peak recall button. This feature allows you to view the minimum and maximum air/fuel ratio readings recorded during a driving session. To use:

  • Press the "Peak Recall" button (location typically on the gauge face or side).
  • The gauge will momentarily display the minimum recorded A/F ratio, then the maximum recorded A/F ratio.
  • Press the button again to return to live readings, or it may automatically revert after a short period.

Maintenance

The MSD 4650 Wideband O2 Gauge Kit is designed for durability and minimal maintenance. However, periodic checks can ensure continued accuracy and longevity.

  • Wiring Inspection: Periodically check all wiring connections for signs of wear, fraying, or heat damage. Ensure connections remain secure.
  • O2 Sensor Condition: While the Bosch LSU 4.9 sensor is robust, prolonged exposure to leaded fuels or certain fuel additives can reduce its lifespan. If readings become erratic or inconsistent, consider inspecting or replacing the O2 sensor.
  • Gauge Cleaning: Clean the gauge face with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the display.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your MSD 4650 Wideband O2 Gauge Kit, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Gauge does not power on.No power supply, faulty ground, blown fuse.Check power and ground connections. Verify fuse in the power circuit.
Erratic or inconsistent A/F readings.Loose O2 sensor connection, faulty O2 sensor, exhaust leak near sensor, sensor not warmed up.Ensure O2 sensor is securely connected. Check for exhaust leaks. Allow sensor to warm up. Consider O2 sensor replacement if issues persist.
Gauge displays "---" or error code.O2 sensor not connected, O2 sensor heater failure, wiring issue.Verify O2 sensor connection to harness. Inspect wiring for damage. Consult MSD support if error persists.
