Milescraft JointMate Dowel Jig

Model: 1369

1. Introduction

The Milescraft JointMate Dowel Jig 1369 is designed to assist in quickly and accurately creating strong dowel joints for woodworking projects. This tool simplifies the process of drilling precise dowel holes in the center of boards, enabling the creation of corner, edge, and surface joints with ease. Its self-centering mechanism and movable fence contribute to accurate and repeatable results.

2. Setup

Before beginning any work, ensure your workspace is clean, well-lit, and free of obstructions. Always wear appropriate safety gear, including eye protection.

  1. Inspect the Jig: Unpack the JointMate Dowel Jig and inspect it for any damage. Ensure all components are present and in good working order.
  2. Understand Components: Familiarize yourself with the jig's self-centering clamps, drill guide bushings (for 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm dowels), and the adjustable fence.
  3. Prepare Material: Ensure your workpiece (wood board) is clean and securely clamped to a stable surface. The jig is compatible with board thicknesses ranging from 12mm to 30mm.

3. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to create precise dowel joints using your Milescraft JointMate Dowel Jig.

  1. Select Dowel Size: Choose the appropriate drill bit and dowel size (6mm, 8mm, or 10mm) for your project. The jig has corresponding guide bushings.
  2. Position the Jig: Place the JointMate jig onto the edge or surface of your workpiece where the dowel hole is to be drilled. The self-centering mechanism will automatically align the jig to the center of the board's thickness.
  3. Adjust the Fence (if necessary): For edge or surface joints requiring specific alignment, use the movable fence to set the desired distance from the edge. Tighten the fence knobs to secure its position.
  4. Drill the Hole: Insert the drill bit into the chosen guide bushing. Ensure the drill is perpendicular to the jig and workpiece. Begin drilling at a moderate speed, applying steady pressure. Drill to the desired depth.

  1. Repeat for Mating Piece: Repeat the drilling process on the mating workpiece, ensuring consistent alignment for a perfect joint.
  2. Assemble the Joint: Apply wood glue to the dowel holes and dowels. Insert the dowels into one workpiece, then align and press the mating workpiece onto the dowels. Clamp the joint until the glue dries.

4. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life and accuracy of your JointMate Dowel Jig.

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the jig with a dry cloth to remove sawdust and debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the plastic or metal components.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a light coat of machine oil to the metal guide bushings and movable parts to ensure smooth operation and prevent rust.
  • Storage: Store the jig in a dry, clean environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the jig for any signs of wear or damage, especially the drill guide bushings. Replace worn parts if necessary to maintain accuracy.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues while using the JointMate Dowel Jig, consider the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Dowel holes are slightly misaligned.Jig not securely clamped; workpiece shifted during drilling; worn drill bit.Ensure both the jig and workpiece are firmly clamped. Use a sharp drill bit. Apply steady, even pressure during drilling.
Difficulty drilling on narrow boards.Insufficient clamping surface for the jig.Use auxiliary clamping blocks or a wider sacrificial board to provide a stable surface for the jig.
Drill bit binds or struggles.Dull drill bit; incorrect drill speed; excessive pressure.Replace or sharpen the drill bit. Adjust drill speed according to wood type. Reduce drilling pressure.
