2. Setup and Installation
This keycap set is designed for mechanical keyboards with MX switches. A keycap puller is included in the package to assist with installation.
2.1. Removing Existing Keycaps
- Ensure your keyboard is disconnected from its power source.
- Carefully use the provided keycap puller to grip the sides of an existing keycap.
- Gently pull upwards to remove the keycap from the switch stem. Repeat for all keycaps you wish to replace.
2.2. Installing New Keycaps
- Align the cross-shaped stem of the new keycap with the switch stem on your keyboard.
- Press down firmly and evenly until the keycap is securely seated.
- Note that the keycaps are designed with an OEM profile, meaning their height and angle vary by row. Ensure you install the correct keycap on its intended row for optimal ergonomics. The set includes 104 keys for ANSI standard layout.
- The "Splash key" (backslash/pipe) has been updated to gray, matching the Tab key.

2.3. Compatibility
This keycap set is compatible with most standard ANSI MX switches keyboards, including Cherry MX, Gateron MX, and Kailh MX switches. The bottom modifier key layout should be 1x6.25u spacebar and 7x1.25u modifier keys. The spacebar length is approximately 11.7cm.
2.4. Incompatibility
- Keyboards with a spacebar of 6u, 6.5u, or 7u instead of 6.25u are not compatible.
- Not compatible with Corsair or HHKB keyboards.
- Not compatible with some older Cherry keyboards where the spacebar or Caps Lock back hole design differs (e.g., 1800 series).
- Keyboards with 64, 68, 75, 84, or 96 key layouts may not be fully compatible.
3. Operating and Usage
The YMDK keycaps are made from durable PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) material, known for its resistance to shine and wear over time. The thickness of each keycap is approximately 1.5mm, contributing to a solid typing feel and sound.
- Material: PBT keycaps offer a textured surface that resists oil buildup and maintains its original feel longer than ABS keycaps.
- Legends: The legends on the printed keycaps are laser engraved, providing clear and long-lasting characters. Blank keycap sets do not feature any legends.
- Profile: The OEM profile provides a sculpted feel, with different keycap heights and angles across rows for ergonomic typing.

4. Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and appearance of your YMDK PBT keycaps, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth with mild soap and water to clean the keycaps. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, as these can damage the PBT material or the laser-engraved legends.
- Dust Removal: Regularly use compressed air or a soft brush to remove dust and debris from between the keycaps.
- Storage: If removing keycaps for storage, keep them in a clean, dry container to prevent dust accumulation and potential damage.
5. Troubleshooting
- Spacebar is clicky or sticky: Some Costar stabilizer keyboards may experience a clicky spacebar with thick keycaps. This can often be resolved by carefully adjusting the stabilizer wire or gently trimming the edges of the inner spacebar. If you encounter this issue, please contact customer support for guidance.
- Missing or broken keycaps upon arrival: In the event that any keycaps are missing or damaged during transit, please contact our customer service immediately. We will arrange for replacement parts to be sent to you promptly.
- Keycaps do not fit: Refer to the compatibility section (2.3 and 2.4) to ensure your keyboard's layout and switch type are supported. Double-check the spacebar size (must be 6.25u) and modifier key sizes.
