The Microsoft Surface Pro (5th Gen) is a versatile 2-in-1 device designed to combine the power of a laptop with the flexibility of a tablet. Featuring a 7th generation Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, and 128GB of storage, it offers robust performance for various tasks. The device includes a stunning PixelSense display that supports both pen and touch input, enhancing productivity and creative workflows. Its refined design provides extended battery life and improved performance compared to previous generations.

Setup

1. Initial Power On

Connect the Power Supply Unit to the Surface Pro and a power outlet. Press the power button located on the top edge of the device. The device will boot up and guide you through the initial Windows 10 Professional setup process.

2. Attaching the Type Cover

Align the magnetic connector of the Surface Pro Platinum Cover with the bottom edge of the Surface Pro. The cover will snap into place magnetically. You can adjust the angle of the Type Cover for comfortable typing.

3. Connecting to Wi-Fi

During the initial setup, you will be prompted to connect to a Wi-Fi network. Select your network from the list and enter the password if required. This will enable internet access for updates and online services.

4. Windows Hello Setup (Optional)

The Surface Pro supports Windows Hello for secure and fast login using facial recognition. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up this feature during initial configuration or later via Windows Settings.

Operating the Surface Pro

Modes of Use

The Surface Pro offers multiple modes for different tasks:

  • Laptop Mode: Use with the Platinum Type Cover attached and the kickstand extended for a traditional laptop experience.
  • Studio Mode: Lower the kickstand to a shallow angle for writing and drawing with the Surface Pen (sold separately).
  • Tablet Mode: Detach the Type Cover or fold it back completely to use the Surface Pro as a standalone tablet.

Touchscreen and Gestures

The PixelSense display is a multi-touch screen. Common gestures include:

  • Tap: Select an item or open an application.
  • Swipe: Scroll through content or navigate between screens.
  • Pinch-to-zoom: Zoom in or out on images and web pages.
  • Two-finger scroll: Scroll vertically or horizontally.

Using the Type Cover

The Platinum Type Cover provides a full-size keyboard and a large glass trackpad. The keys are backlit for use in low-light conditions. The trackpad supports multi-touch gestures for navigation and control.

Using the Surface Pen (Sold Separately)

The Surface Pen allows for precise writing, drawing, and annotation directly on the screen. It offers pressure sensitivity for a natural writing experience. Pair the pen via Bluetooth in Windows Settings.

Touchscreen Unresponsive

  • Restart the device.
  • Ensure the screen is clean and free of debris.
  • Check for available Windows updates, as these often include driver fixes.

Type Cover Not Responding

  • Ensure the Type Cover is securely attached to the Surface Pro.
  • Detach and reattach the Type Cover.
  • Restart the Surface Pro.
