1. Product Overview

The American Plumber WDGD-5005 is a high-performance dual-gradient polypropylene filter cartridge designed for whole house heavy-duty water filtration systems. This cartridge effectively reduces sediment, dirt, rust, and other particulate matter from your water supply, improving water quality throughout your home.

Key Features:

2. Setup and Installation

This section provides general guidelines for replacing your filter cartridge. Always refer to your specific filter housing manual for detailed instructions and safety precautions.

Safety Precautions:

  • Turn off the main water supply before beginning installation or replacement.
  • Relieve pressure from the filter housing using the pressure release button (if available).
  • Have a bucket or towel ready to catch any residual water.

Installation Steps:

  1. Turn Off Water Supply: Locate and turn off the main water supply valve to your home or the specific valve leading to the filter housing.
  2. Relieve Pressure: Press the red pressure release button on top of the filter housing (if present) to release trapped air and water pressure.
  3. Open Housing: Unscrew the filter housing sump using the provided filter wrench. Carefully lower the sump, allowing any remaining water to drain into a bucket.
  4. Remove Old Cartridge: Discard the old filter cartridge. Inspect the O-ring inside the housing for any damage or wear. Clean the inside of the housing sump with warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly.
  5. Install New Cartridge: Insert the new American Plumber WDGD-5005 cartridge into the housing sump. Ensure it is centered and seated properly on the standpipe at the bottom of the housing.
  6. Lubricate O-ring: Apply a thin layer of food-grade silicone grease to the O-ring. Place the O-ring back into its groove in the housing cap or sump. This helps prevent leaks.
  7. Reassemble Housing: Carefully screw the housing sump back onto the housing cap. Hand-tighten until snug, then use the filter wrench for an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn to ensure a tight seal. Do not overtighten.
  8. Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn on the main water supply valve. As the housing fills, press the pressure release button again to allow air to escape. Release the button once water begins to flow from it.
  9. Check for Leaks: Monitor the filter housing for any leaks for several minutes. If leaks occur, turn off the water, relieve pressure, and re-tighten the housing.
  10. Flush System: Run water from a nearby cold water faucet for several minutes to flush out any air or fine carbon particles that may be present after installation.

3. Operating Instructions

The American Plumber WDGD-5005 filter cartridge operates passively within your compatible filter housing. Once installed correctly, it continuously filters your water supply.

Normal Operation:

  • Ensure the water supply to the filter housing is fully open.
  • The filter will reduce sediment and particulate matter from all water flowing through it.
  • No electrical power or user interaction is required for the filter to function.

4. Maintenance

Regular replacement of your filter cartridge is essential to maintain optimal water quality and system performance.

Filter Replacement:

  • It is recommended to replace the WDGD-5005 filter cartridge every 3 to 6 months, or sooner if you notice a significant drop in water pressure or a decline in water quality.
  • The actual lifespan of the cartridge depends on your local water conditions and household water usage.
  • Follow the 'Setup and Installation' steps (Section 2) for replacing the cartridge.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your filtration system, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

Reduced Water Flow:

  • Clogged Filter: The most common cause. If the filter has been in use for an extended period or your water has high sediment, the filter may be clogged. Replace the cartridge.
  • Air in System: After a cartridge change, air can be trapped. Ensure the pressure release button was used during startup and flush faucets thoroughly.
  • Partially Closed Valve: Check that all water supply valves leading to and from the filter housing are fully open.

Poor Water Quality / Sediment Present:

  • Expired Filter: The filter may have reached the end of its effective lifespan. Replace the cartridge.
  • Improper Installation: Ensure the cartridge is correctly seated within the housing and the housing is properly sealed.
  • Bypass Valve Open: Check if your filter system has a bypass valve that is accidentally open, allowing unfiltered water to pass through.

Leaks from Housing:

  • Loose Housing: Ensure the housing sump is tightened securely, but do not overtighten.
  • Damaged or Misplaced O-ring: Inspect the O-ring for cracks, tears, or improper seating. Replace if damaged, and ensure it is properly lubricated and seated in its groove.
  • Cracked Housing: In rare cases, the housing itself may be cracked. Inspect the housing for any visible damage.
