Setup and Installation
The Hella 550 fog lights are designed for front mounting on your vehicle. Follow these steps for proper installation.
1. Mounting the Lights

Image: Two Hella 550 amber fog lights shown with their protective covers. The lights feature a rectangular design with a ribbed amber lens.
- Choose Mounting Location: Select a sturdy, flat surface on the front bumper or a suitable light bar. Ensure the lights will not obstruct vehicle sensors or existing lighting.
- Mark Drilling Points: Use the provided mounting brackets as a template to mark the drilling locations.
- Drill Holes: Carefully drill holes of the appropriate size for the mounting bolts.
- Secure Lights: Attach the lights to the vehicle using the supplied bolts, nuts, and washers. Ensure they are tightened securely but do not overtighten.
- Adjust Aim: Loosely tighten the mounting bolts to allow for vertical adjustment. The lights should be aimed slightly downwards to illuminate the road surface directly in front of the vehicle without blinding oncoming traffic.
2. Wiring Connection

Image: Rear view of a Hella 550 fog light, showing the black housing, 'Comet 550' branding, and the blue and black wires extending from the unit for electrical connection.
- Connect Lights to Harness: Connect the wires from each fog light to the corresponding connectors on the wiring harness. Ensure polarity is correct (typically black to ground, blue to positive).
- Mount Relay: Find a dry, secure location in the engine bay to mount the relay.
- Connect Power: Connect the main power wire from the harness (usually red and thicker) to the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery, or to a fused accessory power source.
- Connect Ground: Connect the ground wire from the harness (usually black) to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the vehicle chassis.
- Install Switch: Route the switch wires into the vehicle's cabin. Choose a convenient location for the illuminated on/off switch, ensuring it does not interfere with vehicle operation. Drill a hole of the appropriate size for the switch. Connect the switch wires to the harness as per the included wiring diagram (refer to the diagram provided with your physical kit for specific connections).
- Test Functionality: Reconnect the vehicle's battery. Turn on the ignition and test the fog lights using the newly installed switch.
Operating Instructions
The Hella 550 Amber Fog Lights are designed to provide additional illumination in adverse weather conditions such as fog, heavy rain, or snow, and for off-road use where maximum visibility is desired.
- Turning On/Off: Use the installed illuminated switch to activate or deactivate the fog lights. The switch will typically illuminate when the lights are on.
- Purpose of Amber Lens: The amber lens helps to reduce glare and improve contrast in foggy or dusty conditions, making it easier to see the road and obstacles.
- Legal Compliance: Be aware of local regulations regarding the use of auxiliary lighting on public roads.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your Hella 550 fog lights.
- Cleaning: Clean the light lenses regularly with a soft cloth and mild soap solution to remove dirt and debris. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can scratch the lens.
- Bulb Replacement: If a bulb burns out, replace it with a new H3 12V 55W halogen bulb. Disconnect power, remove the rear cover, carefully remove the old bulb, and insert the new one without touching the glass. Reassemble the cover securely.
- Check Connections: Periodically inspect all wiring connections for corrosion or looseness. Ensure all mounting hardware remains tight.
- Protective Covers: Use the provided protective covers when the lights are not in use, especially during off-road driving or when parked, to shield the lenses from impacts and UV damage.
