4.1 LED Indicators

  • PWR1/PWR2: Power input status indicators.
  • MB: Modbus communication status.
  • EIP: EtherNet/IP communication status.
  • Ready: Device operational status.

4.2 Ports

  • Ethernet 1/2: RJ45 ports for EtherNet/IP network connection.
  • Console: RJ45 port for local configuration access.
  • MODBUS: DB9 serial port for Modbus RTU/ASCII connection.

5. Setup

5.1 Mounting

The MGate 5105-MB-EIP is designed for DIN-rail mounting. Securely attach the device to a standard DIN rail in an industrial enclosure.

5.2 Power Connection

Connect a 12-48 VDC power supply to the terminal block. Ensure correct polarity. The PWR1 and PWR2 LEDs will illuminate upon successful power connection.

5.3 Network Connection

  • EtherNet/IP: Connect standard Ethernet cables from your EtherNet/IP network to the Ethernet 1 and/or Ethernet 2 ports.
  • Modbus: Connect your Modbus RTU/ASCII device to the DB9 MODBUS port using an appropriate serial cable.

5.4 Initial Configuration

Access the gateway's web-based management interface by connecting a PC to one of the Ethernet ports and entering the default IP address (refer to the quick installation guide for the default IP). Alternatively, use the console port for command-line interface access.

6. Operating Instructions

Once configured, the MGate 5105-MB-EIP operates as a transparent protocol converter. Data from Modbus devices will be translated and made available to EtherNet/IP controllers, and vice-versa.

6.1 Modbus to EtherNet/IP Conversion

Configure the Modbus master/slave settings and EtherNet/IP scanner/adapter settings via the web interface. Map the Modbus registers to EtherNet/IP tags to enable data exchange.

6.2 MQTT Cloud Connectivity

Utilize the built-in device SDKs to establish secure MQTT connections to cloud platforms. Configure MQTT broker details, topics, and authentication credentials to publish Modbus or EtherNet/IP data to the cloud.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the device exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.
  • Firmware Updates: Check the MOXA website for the latest firmware versions. Regularly update the firmware to ensure optimal performance and security.
  • Configuration Backup: Regularly back up your device configuration settings to prevent data loss.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1 LED Indicators

  • No Power LEDs (PWR1/PWR2): Check power supply connection and voltage.
  • MB/EIP LEDs Off or Flashing Erratically: Verify network cable connections, device configurations, and communication parameters for Modbus and EtherNet/IP.
  • Ready LED Not On: The device may be booting up or experiencing a critical error. Refer to the user manual for specific LED patterns.

8.2 Connectivity Issues

  • Ensure IP addresses, subnet masks, and gateway settings are correctly configured.
  • Verify that Modbus slave IDs and function codes are correctly set.
  • Check for cable integrity and proper termination for serial Modbus connections.
