4. Hardware Description
4.1 Front Panel Layout
The front panel of the EDS-308-T switch features Ethernet ports, LED indicators, and power input terminals.

Figure 1: Front view of the Moxa EDS-308-T switch. This image displays the eight RJ45 Ethernet ports, labeled 1 through 8, along with LED indicators for power (PWR1, PWR2), fault (FAULT), and individual port link/activity. The top features a green terminal block for power input and relay output.
4.2 LED Indicators
- PWR1/PWR2: Green LED. Indicates power input from PWR1 or PWR2 is active.
- FAULT: Red LED. Illuminates when a power input fails or a configured port link-down event occurs.
- 10/100M (Port LEDs): Green LED for each port.
- On: Link established at 100 Mbps.
- Flashing: Data activity at 100 Mbps.
- Off: No link or link at 10 Mbps.
- 10M (Port LEDs): Amber LED for each port.
- On: Link established at 10 Mbps.
- Flashing: Data activity at 10 Mbps.
- Off: No link or link at 100 Mbps.
4.3 Rear/Side Panel
The rear and side panels typically feature mounting options and heat dissipation fins.

5. Installation
5.1 Mounting
The EDS-308-T supports DIN-rail mounting. Follow these steps:
- Attach the DIN-rail kit to the rear of the switch (if not pre-installed).
- Hook the top of the DIN-rail clip over the top edge of the DIN rail.
- Press the switch firmly against the DIN rail until it snaps into place.
- Ensure the switch is securely fastened.
5.2 Wiring the Power Input
The EDS-308-T features redundant dual DC power inputs. Use the terminal block at the top of the device.
- Ensure power sources are off before connecting wires.
- Connect the positive (+) wire from your DC power supply to the V+ terminal.
- Connect the negative (-) wire from your DC power supply to the V- terminal.
- Connect the ground wire to the ⊗ (ground) terminal.
- Repeat for the second power input (if using redundancy).
- Tighten the terminal block screws to secure the wires.
5.3 Connecting the Relay Output
The relay output can be used to trigger an alarm when a power failure or port link-down event occurs.
- Connect the alarm device to the NO (Normally Open) and COM (Common) contacts on the terminal block.
- Refer to the device's specifications for relay contact ratings.
5.4 Connecting Network Cables
Connect standard RJ45 Ethernet cables from your network devices (e.g., PCs, PLCs, other switches) to the 10/100BaseTX ports on the front panel of the EDS-308-T.
- The switch supports auto MDI/MDI-X, so straight-through or crossover cables can be used.
- Ensure cables are securely seated in the ports.
6. Setup and Operation
6.1 Initial Power-Up
- After all connections are made, apply power to the EDS-308-T.
- Observe the PWR1 and/or PWR2 LEDs. They should illuminate green, indicating successful power-up.
- The FAULT LED should remain off under normal operating conditions.
6.2 Network Connectivity
As an unmanaged switch, the EDS-308-T operates on a plug-and-play basis. No software configuration is required.
- When a network device is connected to a port, the corresponding 10/100M or 10M LED will light up, indicating a link.
- The LED will flash when data is being transmitted or received through that port.
- Ensure all connected devices are configured with compatible network settings (e.g., IP addresses within the same subnet if using IP-based communication).
7. Maintenance
7.1 Cleaning
- Periodically clean the exterior of the switch with a soft, dry cloth.
- Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.
- Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust and debris to maintain proper heat dissipation.
7.2 Firmware Updates
As an unmanaged switch, the EDS-308-T typically does not require user-initiated firmware updates. Any updates would generally be handled by the manufacturer for critical bug fixes or performance improvements, and would require specialized tools or procedures not available to end-users.
8. Troubleshooting
- No Power (PWR LEDs Off):
- Check power cable connections to the terminal block.
- Verify the power supply is functioning and providing the correct voltage.
- Ensure the power source is active.
- FAULT LED On:
- One or both power inputs may have failed. Check power supplies.
- A configured port link-down event has occurred. Check network cable connections and the status of connected devices.
- No Link (Port LEDs Off):
- Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected at both ends.
- Verify the connected device is powered on and functioning correctly.
- Try a different Ethernet cable.
- Test with a different port on the switch.
- Slow Network Performance:
- Check for excessive network traffic or loops (though unmanaged switches have limited loop prevention).
- Ensure cables are not damaged and are of appropriate quality.
- Verify connected devices are operating at their expected speeds (10/100 Mbps).
If issues persist, contact Moxa technical support for further assistance.
