Introduction
The Astromania Red Dot Finder Scope is designed to assist in quickly and easily locating celestial objects with your astronomical telescope. It projects a small red dot onto a non-magnifying viewing window, indicating the exact point the main telescope is aimed at. This manual provides detailed instructions for its proper setup, operation, and maintenance.
Product Overview
Familiarize yourself with the components of your Red Dot Finder Scope:

Figure 1: Key components of the Red Dot Finder Scope. This diagram identifies the key components of the Red Dot Finder Scope, including the power and adjustment knobs, battery compartment, and mounting bracket.
- Power Knob: Activates the red dot and adjusts its brightness.
- Azimuth Adjustment Knob: Used for horizontal alignment of the red dot.
- Altitude Adjustment Knob: Used for vertical alignment of the red dot.
- Battery Casing: Houses the CR2032 lithium button-cell battery.
- Dovetail Mounting Bracket: Attaches the finder scope to compatible telescope bases.
- Thumbscrews: Secure the finder scope to the dovetail base and allow for battery compartment access.
Setup
1. Battery Installation
The Red Dot Finder Scope requires one CR2032 lithium button-cell battery (not included).
- Unscrew the thumbscrews on the dovetail mounting bracket and remove the bracket from the finder scope body.
- Locate the battery cover on the side of the finder scope body. Use a small screwdriver to unscrew the screw holding the battery cover in place.
- Insert one CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing up (towards the clip side).
- Replace the battery cover and secure it with the screw. Reattach the dovetail mounting bracket.

Figure 2: Battery Installation. Follow these steps to correctly install the CR2032 battery. First, unscrew the thumbscrews to remove the dovetail mounting bracket. Then, use a screwdriver to open the battery cover and insert the CR2032 battery with the positive side facing up.
2. Mounting the Finder Scope
The foot of the finder is designed to fit straight into standard Synta-style dovetail slots found on most astronomical telescopes.
- Slide the dovetail mounting bracket of the red dot finder into the dovetail base on your telescope.
- Tighten the thumbscrew on the telescope's dovetail base to secure the finder scope firmly in place.

Figure 3: Mounting the Finder Scope. The Red Dot Finder Scope can be mounted on various astronomical telescopes using its dovetail bracket. It can also be adapted for use with DSLR cameras for astrophotography.
Operation
1. Powering On and Brightness Adjustment
The power knob also controls the brightness of the red dot.
- Rotate the power knob (located on the side of the finder scope) clockwise to turn on the red dot.
- Continue rotating the knob to adjust the brightness of the red dot to your preferred level. A brighter setting is suitable for daytime alignment, while a dimmer setting is better for night-time observation to avoid obscuring faint objects.
- To turn off the red dot, rotate the power knob counter-clockwise until it clicks off. Always turn off the finder when not in use to conserve battery life.

Figure 4: Brightness Adjustment. The power knob on the side of the finder scope controls both activation and brightness. Rotate it to turn the red dot on and adjust its intensity to suit ambient light conditions.
2. Aligning the Red Dot Finder
Accurate alignment ensures that the red dot corresponds precisely to the center of your telescope's view.
- Daytime Alignment: Point your main telescope at a distant, stationary object (e.g., a chimney, a street light) during daylight hours. Use a low-power eyepiece (e.g., 25mm) to center the object in your telescope's field of view.
- Adjust Red Dot: Turn on the red dot finder and adjust its brightness. Look through the finder's viewing window. Use the Azimuth Adjustment Knob (for horizontal adjustment) and the Altitude Adjustment Knob (for vertical adjustment) to move the red dot until it is precisely centered on the same distant object you centered in your main telescope.
- Verify Alignment: Switch between looking through your telescope and the red dot finder to ensure both are pointing at the exact same spot. Make fine adjustments as needed.
- Night-time Use: Once aligned, you can use the red dot finder at night. Simply turn it on, locate your desired celestial object by centering it within the red dot, and then look through your main telescope for a magnified view.

Figure 5: Alignment Steps. This visual guide illustrates the process of aligning your Red Dot Finder. It involves mounting the finder, adjusting the red dot, pointing the telescope at a distant object, aligning the red dot with that object, and then using it for celestial observation after dark.

Maintenance
Battery Replacement
If the red dot becomes dim or does not illuminate, the CR2032 battery may need replacement. Follow the battery installation steps outlined in the Setup section.
Cleaning
To clean the optics, use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals. For the body of the finder scope, a damp cloth can be used.
Troubleshooting
- Red dot does not appear:
- Ensure the power knob is rotated sufficiently to turn on the red dot.
- Check if the CR2032 battery is installed correctly with the positive side up.
- Replace the battery with a new CR2032 battery if the current one is depleted.
- Red dot is too dim or too bright:
- Adjust the power knob to increase or decrease the brightness to a comfortable level for current lighting conditions.
- Red dot is not aligned with the telescope's view:
- Re-perform the alignment procedure as described in the Operation section, ensuring the telescope is pointed at a distant, stationary object.
- Ensure the finder scope is securely mounted to the telescope's dovetail base and not loose.
