Operating a chainsaw can be hazardous. Always prioritize safety to prevent serious injury or death. Adhere to all local regulations and safety guidelines.
2.1 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Head Protection: Wear a safety helmet.
- Eye Protection: Use safety glasses or a face shield.
- Hearing Protection: Wear earplugs or earmuffs.
- Hand Protection: Wear heavy-duty work gloves.
- Leg Protection: Use chainsaw protective trousers or chaps.
- Foot Protection: Wear steel-toed safety boots with good grip.
2.2 Work Area Safety
- Ensure the work area is clear of bystanders, children, and pets.
- Maintain stable footing and balance at all times.
- Clear away obstacles that could cause you to trip or lose balance.
- Do not operate the chainsaw in wet conditions or in areas with poor visibility.
2.3 Fuel Safety
- Handle fuel in a well-ventilated area, away from sparks or open flames.
- Do not smoke while fueling the chainsaw.
- Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately.
- Store fuel in approved containers.
2.4 Operation Safety
- Always hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands, with your thumbs and fingers encircling the handles.
- Be aware of kickback, which can occur when the moving chain at the tip of the guide bar contacts an object.
- Never operate the chainsaw when fatigued, ill, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Do not overreach or cut above shoulder height.
3. Components and Controls
Familiarize yourself with the various parts of your ECHO GC351 chainsaw before operation.

Image 3.1: The ECHO GC351 chainsaw in operation, demonstrating its use for cutting logs. The image shows the guide bar and chain engaged with a wooden log, with sawdust visible on the ground. A gloved hand is holding the rear handle, indicating proper two-hand operation.
- Guide Bar: Supports and guides the saw chain.
- Saw Chain: The cutting component of the chainsaw.
- Front Hand Guard: Protects the operator's left hand and activates the chain brake.
- Front Handle: For the operator's left hand.
- Starter Grip: Used to start the engine.
- Choke Lever: Used for cold starting the engine.
- Rear Handle: For the operator's right hand, contains throttle controls.
- Throttle Trigger: Controls engine speed.
- Throttle Trigger Lockout: Prevents accidental throttle engagement.
- Chain Brake: Safety device to stop the chain quickly.
- Muffler: Reduces engine noise and directs exhaust gases.
- Fuel Tank Cap: Covers the fuel tank opening.
- Oil Tank Cap: Covers the chain oil tank opening.
- Engine Stop Switch: Turns the engine off.
4. Setup
4.1 Guide Bar and Saw Chain Assembly
- Ensure the engine is off and the spark plug cap is disconnected.
- Remove the chain cover nuts and chain cover.
- Place the saw chain around the clutch drum and guide bar. Ensure the cutting edges face forward on the top of the guide bar.
- Mount the guide bar onto the studs, aligning the chain tensioner pin with the hole in the guide bar.
- Replace the chain cover and loosely tighten the nuts.
- Adjust chain tension using the tensioning screw. The chain should be snug against the guide bar but still able to be pulled freely by hand.
- Tighten the chain cover nuts securely.
4.2 Fueling
The ECHO GC351 uses a 2-stroke engine. It requires a specific mixture of gasoline and 2-stroke engine oil.
- Fuel Mixture: Use unleaded gasoline mixed with high-quality 2-stroke engine oil at a ratio specified by the manufacturer (typically 50:1 or 25:1, refer to your engine oil's instructions).
- Fuel Tank: Carefully fill the fuel tank, avoiding overfilling. Securely close the fuel tank cap.
- Chain Oil Tank: Fill the chain oil tank with appropriate chain lubricant. This oil is crucial for lubricating the guide bar and chain during operation. Securely close the oil tank cap.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Starting the Engine
Cold Start (First start of the day or after a long period of inactivity):
- Place the chainsaw on a firm, flat surface.
- Engage the chain brake by pushing the front hand guard forward.
- Set the engine stop switch to the ON position.
- Pull the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position.
- If equipped, press the primer bulb several times until fuel is visible.
- Hold the front handle firmly with one hand and pull the starter grip briskly until the engine fires (usually a few pulls).
- Once the engine fires, immediately push the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE or RUN position.
- Pull the starter grip again until the engine starts and runs smoothly.
- Briefly blip the throttle trigger to disengage the half-choke.
- Disengage the chain brake by pulling the front hand guard back towards the front handle. The chain should now be free to move.
Warm Start (Engine is already warm from recent use):
- Place the chainsaw on a firm, flat surface.
- Engage the chain brake.
- Set the engine stop switch to the ON position.
- Ensure the choke lever is in the RUN position.
- Hold the front handle firmly and pull the starter grip briskly until the engine starts.
- Disengage the chain brake.
5.2 Cutting Techniques
- Always maintain a firm, balanced stance.
- Keep both hands on the chainsaw handles at all times during operation.
- Avoid cutting with the tip of the guide bar to minimize the risk of kickback.
- When cutting, allow the chain to do the work. Do not force the saw.
- Be aware of falling branches or logs and plan your escape route.
5.3 Stopping the Engine
- Release the throttle trigger to allow the engine to return to idle.
- Engage the chain brake.
- Move the engine stop switch to the OFF position.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your chainsaw. Always ensure the engine is off and the spark plug cap is disconnected before performing any maintenance.
6.1 Daily / Before Each Use
- Check chain tension: Adjust if too loose or too tight.
- Check chain sharpness: Sharpen if dull or damaged.
- Verify chain oil level: Refill as needed.
- Inspect fuel level: Refill with proper fuel mixture.
- Check air filter for excessive dirt.
- Test chain brake functionality.
6.2 After Each Use
- Clean the air filter.
- Clean the guide bar groove and oil holes.
- Remove sawdust and debris from the chain and sprocket area.
- Clean engine cooling fins to prevent overheating.
6.3 Periodic Maintenance
- Chain Sharpening: Sharpen the saw chain regularly using a round file of the correct diameter. Refer to the chain manufacturer's instructions.
- Spark Plug: Inspect and clean the spark plug. Replace if electrodes are worn or fouled.
- Fuel Filter: Inspect and replace the fuel filter as needed.
- Muffler: Clean carbon deposits from the muffler and exhaust port.
7. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your ECHO GC351 chainsaw.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine won't start | No fuel, incorrect choke setting, fouled spark plug, chain brake engaged | Check fuel level and mixture, adjust choke, clean/replace spark plug, disengage chain brake |
| Engine starts but stalls | Incorrect choke setting, dirty air filter, stale fuel | Adjust choke, clean air filter, replace fuel with fresh mixture |
| Chain not cutting efficiently | Dull chain, incorrect chain tension, chain installed backward | Sharpen chain, adjust tension, check chain direction |
| Excessive smoke from exhaust | Incorrect fuel/oil mixture, dirty air filter | Verify fuel mixture ratio, clean air filter |
