4. Setup
4.1 Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully unpack the UPS and inspect it for any shipping damage. Report any damage to the carrier and your dealer. Retain the packing materials for future use.
4.2 Battery Connection
The UPS is shipped with the internal battery disconnected for safety. Before initial use, connect the battery according to the instructions provided in the quick start guide or on the unit itself. This typically involves pulling out the battery tray, rotating the battery, and pushing it back in until it clicks into place.
4.3 Placement and Mounting
The SMT1500RMI2UC is designed for rack-mount installation. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit. Avoid placing the UPS near heat sources or in areas with excessive dust or moisture.

4.4 Connecting Equipment
- Connect the UPS to a properly grounded utility power outlet using the provided power cord.
- Connect your critical equipment (servers, network devices, etc.) to the IEC-C13 output outlets on the rear of the UPS. Ensure the total load does not exceed the UPS's capacity.
- For remote monitoring, connect an Ethernet cable from your network to the SmartConnect network port on the rear panel.
4.5 Initial Power-Up
Press the power button on the front panel to turn on the UPS. The LCD display will illuminate, and the UPS will perform a self-test. Allow the UPS to charge for at least 24 hours before relying on its full battery runtime capacity.
5. Operation
5.1 Powering On/Off
- To Power On: Press and hold the power button until the display illuminates.
- To Power Off: Press and hold the power button until the display turns off.
5.2 LCD Display and Navigation
The LCD display provides real-time status information. Use the navigation buttons (up, down, enter, escape) to browse through menus, view detailed information, and adjust settings such as output voltage, alarm thresholds, and self-test schedules.
5.3 Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR)
The UPS features Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) to correct minor voltage fluctuations without switching to battery power. This extends battery life and ensures a stable power supply to connected equipment.
5.4 Green Mode
The Green Mode feature optimizes UPS efficiency by bypassing the AVR when utility power is stable, reducing energy consumption and heat generation. The UPS automatically switches to AVR or battery mode when power conditions require it.
5.5 SmartConnect Monitoring
Once connected to your network, register your UPS with the APC SmartConnect portal. This allows you to monitor the UPS status, receive email alerts for critical events, and perform remote diagnostics via a secure web interface or mobile application.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Battery Care and Replacement
The internal battery has a typical lifespan of 3-5 years. Regular self-tests help monitor battery health. When the battery needs replacement, the UPS will indicate this on the LCD and via SmartConnect. Replace batteries with APC-approved replacement battery cartridges (RBCs) to ensure optimal performance and safety.
6.2 Firmware Updates
Periodically check for firmware updates through the SmartConnect portal or APC's website. Firmware updates can provide performance enhancements, bug fixes, and new features. Follow the provided instructions carefully when performing updates.
6.3 Cleaning
Keep the UPS free from dust and debris. Use a dry cloth to clean the exterior. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your UPS, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
