Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use, maintenance, and care of your Zippo windproof lighter, Model 79578. Please read thoroughly before first use to ensure proper operation and longevity of your product.
Safety Information
- Keep out of reach of children. Lighters are not toys.
- Ignite lighter away from face and clothing. Always ensure a safe distance.
- Contains flammable liquid. Handle with care and store away from heat sources.
- Do not expose to heat above 120°F (49°C) or prolonged sunlight. This can cause pressure buildup and potential hazard.
- Never puncture or incinerate. Dispose of properly when no longer usable.
- Ensure flame is extinguished after each use. Close the lid completely to cut off oxygen.
Setup: Initial Fueling
Your Zippo lighter is shipped without fuel for safety. It must be filled with Zippo premium lighter fluid before first use.
- Remove the Insert: Open the lighter lid. Grasp the top of the insert (the metal unit inside the case) and pull it out.
- Lift the Felt Pad: Turn the insert upside down. Lift the felt pad at the bottom to expose the packing material.
- Fill with Fluid: Slowly saturate the packing material with Zippo premium lighter fluid. Stop filling when the fluid reaches the top of the packing, or when the color of the packing changes. Do not overfill.
- Replace Felt Pad: Lower the felt pad securely.
- Reinsert: Slide the insert back into the case, ensuring it is fully seated.
- Clean Up: Wipe any excess fluid from the lighter and your hands before igniting.

Operating Your Zippo Lighter
- Open the Lid: Flip open the lighter's lid.
- Strike the Wheel: Hold the lighter firmly. With your thumb, strike the flint wheel downwards against the flint to create a spark.
- Ignite: The spark will ignite the fuel-soaked wick, producing a flame.
- Extinguish: To extinguish the flame, simply close the lid. The lid will cut off the oxygen supply, putting out the flame.
Note: The Zippo windproof design allows the flame to remain lit in windy conditions, making it reliable in various environments.
Maintenance
Refueling
Refuel your lighter as described in the "Setup: Initial Fueling" section when the flame becomes weak or fails to ignite. For optimal performance, use only Zippo premium lighter fluid.
Replacing the Flint
- Remove Insert: Pull the insert out of the case.
- Unscrew Flint Spring: Turn the insert upside down. Unscrew the brass flint spring screw at the bottom using a small screwdriver or the edge of the lighter lid.
- Remove Old Flint: Carefully remove the old flint and the flint spring.
- Insert New Flint: Insert a new Zippo flint into the flint tube.
- Replace Flint Spring: Reinsert the flint spring, ensuring the brass tip is facing the flint. Screw the flint spring screw back in tightly.
- Reinsert: Place the insert back into the lighter case.

Replacing the Wick
- Remove Insert: Pull the insert out of the case.
- Remove Flint and Felt Pad: Remove the flint spring, flint, and felt pad as described in the "Replacing the Flint" section.
- Pull Wick: Using tweezers or small pliers, pull the old wick through the chimney from the top until it is fully removed.
- Insert New Wick: Thread a new Zippo wick through the chimney hole from the top.
- Weave Wick: Using tweezers, weave the wick back and forth between the packing material inside the insert. This ensures maximum fuel absorption.
- Trim Wick: Trim the wick even with the top of the chimney.
- Reassemble: Replace the felt pad, flint, and flint spring. Reinsert the unit into the case.
