Operating Instructions

Playing the Otamatone involves a combination of pressing the stem and squeezing its 'cheeks'.

Hold the Otamatone by its stem with one hand, positioning your fingers over the black touch-sensitive strip. Use your other hand to support the head and squeeze the 'cheeks'.

2. Producing Single Notes

Press firmly on different points along the black strip on the stem. The higher you press on the stem, the higher the pitch of the note produced. Experiment with different finger positions to discover the range of sounds.

3. Portamento (Sliding) Technique

To create a smooth, gliding sound between notes, press your finger on the stem and slide it up or down along the black strip without lifting. This technique is known as portamento.

4. Vibrato and "Wah" Effect

  • Vibrato: While holding a note on the stem, gently shake the Otamatone to create a vibrato effect.
  • "Wah" Effect: Squeeze the Otamatone's 'cheeks' (the soft, rubbery part of Kirby's face) to open and close its mouth. This action changes the tone and creates a distinctive "Wah" sound. Combine this with pressing the stem for expressive melodies.
