ZWO ASI1600MM-P

ZWO ASI1600MM Pro Astronomy Camera

User Manual

1. Introduction

The ZWO ASI1600MM Pro is a high-performance monochrome astronomy camera designed for deep-sky imaging, lunar, and solar imaging through a telescope. It features a 4/3” CMOS sensor with 16 megapixels, offering high quantum efficiency for detailed astrophotography with reduced noise and exposure times. Integrated TEC-cooling further minimizes sensor noise, enhancing performance for faint astronomical objects. The camera includes a 256MB DDR3 memory buffer for stable data transfer and a USB 3.0 port supporting up to 14.7 frames per second at full resolution.

This camera is intended for use with refractor or reflector telescopes mounted on a solid equatorial mount capable of accurate sky tracking. It is not designed for eyepiece projection. While it produces monochrome images, color images can be achieved using an astronomical LRGB color filter set and standard image processing techniques. Additional accessories such as an autoguider or focal reducer may be required for optimal results. All necessary software and drivers are available from the manufacturer's website.

2. Safety Information

  • Power Supply: Use only the specified 12V@3A power supply for the TEC cooler. Using an incorrect power supply can damage the camera.
  • Environmental Conditions: Avoid exposing the camera to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or direct sunlight for extended periods.
  • Handling: Handle the camera with care. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to strong impacts.
  • Cleaning: Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials to clean the camera body or sensor. Use a soft, lint-free cloth for external cleaning. For sensor cleaning, consult the manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Disassembly: Do not attempt to disassemble the camera. This will void the warranty and may cause damage.
  • Children: Keep the camera and its accessories out of reach of children.

3. Package Contents

Upon opening the package, verify that all items are present and in good condition. The standard package for the ZWO ASI1600MM Pro typically includes:

  • ZWO ASI1600MM Pro Camera Body
  • 1.25" T-threaded Nosepiece
  • 2" Adapter
  • USB 3.0 Cable
  • USB 2.0 Cables (for hub)
  • Driver CD (or download instructions)

Note: A 12V@3A power supply for the TEC cooler is required but not included.

4. Setup

4.1. Physical Connection

The ASI1600MM Pro camera connects to your telescope's focuser. Depending on your focuser size, use either the included 1.25" T-threaded nosepiece or the 2" adapter.

  1. Attach to Telescope: Securely attach the appropriate nosepiece or adapter to the camera's front opening. Then, insert the camera assembly into your telescope's focuser and tighten the retaining screws.
  2. USB 3.0 Connection: Connect the camera to your computer using the provided USB 3.0 cable. The camera electronics draw power from this connection.
  3. TEC Cooler Power: Connect a separate 12V@3A DC power supply (not included) to the DC 12V port on the back of the camera to power the TEC cooler. Ensure the power supply is correctly rated to avoid damage.
  4. USB 2.0 Hub (Optional): The camera features an integrated USB 2.0 hub. You can connect accessories such as an autoguiding camera or electronic focuser to the USB 2.0 OUT ports.

4.2. Software and Drivers

Before operating the camera, install the necessary drivers and imaging software on your computer. These are available for download from the official ZWO website. The camera is compatible with Mac OS X and Windows (32-bit and 64-bit) XP and later versions.

  • Visit the ZWO official website.
  • Navigate to the support or download section for the ASI1600MM Pro.
  • Download and install the latest camera drivers.
  • Download and install your preferred astronomical imaging software (e.g., SharpCap, N.I.N.A., Astro Photography Tool).

5. Operating the Camera

5.1. Basic Imaging

Once the camera is connected and drivers are installed, launch your imaging software. The software should detect the ASI1600MM Pro. You can then adjust settings such as exposure time, gain, and cooling.

  • Monochrome Imaging: The camera natively captures monochrome images. For deep-sky objects, longer exposures are typically required.
  • Color Imaging: To produce color images, you will need an astronomical LRGB (Luminance, Red, Green, Blue) filter set and a filter wheel. Capture separate images through each filter and combine them during post-processing. Narrowband filters can also be used for specific nebulae.
  • Frame Rate: The USB 3.0 interface allows for high-speed data transfer, achieving up to 14.7 frames per second at full 4656x3520 resolution. Faster rates are possible at lower resolutions, which is beneficial for planetary or lunar imaging.

5.2. TEC Cooling Function

The integrated TEC (Thermoelectric Cooler) system reduces sensor temperature up to 35°C below ambient, significantly lowering thermal noise for improved image quality, especially during long exposures. Ensure the 12V@3A power supply is connected to enable cooling.

  • Activate cooling through your imaging software.
  • Set your desired target temperature. The camera will regulate the sensor temperature to this value.
  • Allow a few minutes for the sensor to reach the target temperature.

6. Maintenance

  • Dust Protection: Always keep the camera's front opening covered with the provided cap when not in use to prevent dust from entering the sensor chamber.
  • External Cleaning: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the camera body. Do not use liquid cleaners directly on the camera.
  • Sensor Cleaning: If dust or smudges appear on the sensor window, consult the ZWO official website for detailed sensor cleaning instructions or contact their support. Improper cleaning can damage the sensor.
  • Storage: Store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, preferably in its original packaging or a padded case, when not in use for extended periods.

7. Troubleshooting

Problem: Camera not detected by computer.
Solution:
  • Ensure the USB 3.0 cable is securely connected to both the camera and the computer.
  • Verify that the camera drivers are correctly installed. Reinstall them if necessary.
  • Try a different USB 3.0 port on your computer.
  • Test with a different USB 3.0 cable if available.
Problem: TEC cooler not functioning.
Solution:
  • Confirm that a 12V@3A DC power supply is connected to the camera's DC 12V port and is powered on.
  • Check the power supply and its cable for any damage.
  • Ensure the cooling function is enabled and a target temperature is set within your imaging software.
Problem: Images are noisy or show amp glow.
Solution:
  • Ensure the TEC cooler is active and the sensor has reached its target temperature.
  • Adjust gain settings in your imaging software. Lower gain generally reduces noise.
  • Utilize dark frames and bias frames during post-processing to calibrate and reduce noise and amp glow.
  • The 256MB DDR3 buffer helps reduce amp glow during data transfer; ensure your USB 3.0 connection is stable.
